Some things that make you go hmmm

This is the Bears only home game in November.

The Bears and Panthers are a combined 3-14 and their losing ways are likely to continue as both teams missed the apparent gem of the 2023 draft class.
The Bears are 3 point favorites, which seems like something they should cover, but they are not a reliable favorite.
Gardner Minshew beat the Panthers by two touchdowns, but those 14 points were scored by the defense and the Colts only threw for 127 yards. Bagent could probably dink and dunk to a win, and shouldn’t have to throw a ton in comeback style.
The defense needs to step up and not allow Young to pick them apart. Could be a grand time for Sweat to introduce himself to the home crowd, because after this week they likely don’t have a win on the schedule until Christmas Eve.

Hahahah.  Great thread title.

I’m sure the Bears will win this handily, for Poles has said they’re very close to turning it around now and I trust him.

Major winning is just around the corner.

Must-win IMO. Every game after is a must-lose.

horsefeathers the season.

If you're gonna jump into tank rooting the rest of the way, might as well tack on this.  Almost certain to control their #1 pick destiny if they lose out (since I don't think either Carolina or Arizona can realistically catch them in SoS)

I just had a thought. If the Texans don't blow the #1 pick by getting that last second win, they likely take Bryce Young at #1. That leaves the Bears at #2 and wonder if the Bears would have even traded #2 or if they'd just have taken CJ Stroud.

Im not sure why they would have taken Stroud, everyone was still pretty high on Fields

Has there been reports about whether Stroud was their QB anyways?  Maybe Houston still takes Stroud and Bears take a slightly worse trade down offer for Young on draft day, OR they end up with the other Houston trade (I guess technically that was the Stroud trade)

Houston is said to have preferred Stroud. But that could be one of those things that is said after the fact that every team says, "this guy was at the top of our board, blah blah"

Bears don't take Stroud if they end up 2. I honestly think they still trade back and get a similar package (maybe no future picks if DJ is still involved). But 1) if the Bears wanted Stroud, they'd just take him 1. and 2) if the Bears were moving on from Fields, I doubt they'd take another Ohio St QB. Not even a "scouting the helmet" type thing per se, but if they felt Fields' issues (going thru reads, pocket presence) were too much, I doubt they go for a QB that was taught by the same coaching staff so soon after.

This is the most boring and uninteresting game in the universe if Bagent starts. If Fields plays at least we can hope to watch him beat up some bums and get back on the right track.

The defense has been kind of solid in 3 of the last 4, that has been nice to watch.

Yeah, look like a professional defense other than the Chargers game. This gives me hope that a combination of coaching/QB change can make this team competitive pretty quickly.

I'm actually not too pessimistic about the ability of the team to be competitive shortly - I'm happy with what I'm seeing from the Oline, the run game has been strong, Moore is a stud, Mooney has turned some things around, Kmet has played well, the defense is gelling (and will only get better with more pass rush) - its all down to the QB play, as ever.

Which is of course the hardest thing to figure out in this league and the most important thing, so

Strange as it sounds I'm somewhat hopeful that Poles will be able to draft an NFL caliber QB.  I think Bagent offers a little proof Poles knows what to look for in a QB, yes, there's arm strength issues.  But, there's evidence of Bagent being able to read progressions, call the proper check-down and get the ball out.  In 2024 Poles will be position to get a QB who has the arm to go along with the other skills.  Pace basically drafted the same QB twice, sure, Justin is the better athlete and smarter than Mitch but, they both have similar flaws.

My tickets for this game are $430 each. Ugh. A chilly Chicago evening watching two of the worst teams in football try to one up each other on the draft board. I am meeting up with a couple of my friends from San Diego who became Panther fans as soon as they became an NFL franchise, mainly because they were tired of San Diego teams screwing them over. I'm pretty sure this will be my last NFL game, so let's hope for a victory.

My take on the QB situation is if you combined the strengths of Bagent and Fields, you'd have yourself a pretty solid NFL QB. But, both have weaknesses that will likely always be exploited at the pro level. I think the Bears have to go QB with the first pick this year, as sad as I am to say that. I really wanted Fields to be the guy. He's running out of time to prove he belongs. I hope he plays Thursday. He really hasn't had as good of an OLine that Bagent got this past week. Maybe, just maybe, Fields can become a highlight machine if given enough protection to gain confidence in his abilities and trust in his protectors.

Here's the real question: What do you do if Fields rolls off 8 games in a row to end the season of the same caliber of play we saw in the Denver and Washington game? Assuming we still have at least one pick in the top 3 (I think thats safe) and one pick in the top 10. Do you still draft one of the QB prospects? Are you obligated to?

It would be an extremely Bears thing to happen of course

Fake Edit: Actually, the most Bears thing to happen is he doesn't play at quite *that* caliber but a notch below that. He has like 5 good games, 2 meh games and 1 bad game. And you end up feeling...fine, but not great.

I think Fields being decent and the Bears losing are mutually exclusive choice points.

Thankfully we're not overly dependent on that! The Panthers will lose for us. Even if Fields plays very well throughout the end of this stretch, this is a team thats 2-7 and can only improve its standing so much. They managed to lose every single game he played well last year, after all.

This team is gonna have a top 5 pick no matter what. And very likely two in the top 10.

If he rolls off 8 quality games in a row it’s a no brainer that he comes back, unless the Carolina pick is #1 and you are in love with the top guy. Then you trade fields in the offseason. If he continues to flow between bad and good games, it all depends on the Carolina pick and which qb you like. Bringing Fields backs on final year, not picking up 5th year option and letting 2024 play out is not the worst option if you don’t have the ideal situation to replace him.

worst case is bears and Carolina picks are outside the top 5 and you allow poles to trade up for the new guy.

Yeah I definitely don't hate the idea of keeping him around next year if we draft a QB and letting the prospect sit - though it would drive Chicago media and fans insane for about a year. I don't think his trade value is gonna be anything special and I would hate to live through the Mike Glennon, Andy Dalton, etc experience again.

I simply cannot fathom a situation where both the Bears and Panthers are too good for one of them to not be in the top 5. Perhaps as I say that a monkey paw is curling somewhere, but I really can't.
