It's annoying that the Dodgers are going to be able to manipulate the CBT figure a bit, but I guess it makes sense.  Technically he is taking less present value over the life of the contract by deferring, so I can't get too worked up about the AAV being reduced for tax purposes.  I have to assume the same would be true for any backloaded deal, even without deferred money?

My first thought was wow I'm glad we didn't spend that much money. My second thought though is how do we expect to beat the Dodgers in the playoffs?

steps to beating the dodgers in the postseason:

1) play the dodgers in the postseason

Lol, Ken Rosenthal is being ridiculous now. Ohtani already said on instragram he’s signing for the Dodgers, it’s done.

$1 Million per year over 10 years and $990 million deferred. Do it Jed!

Jed: But MLB the Show would not let me go above $35 million per year.

anyway, a lot of sour grapes in this thread as expected. The Dodgers were a great team, now they are greater? I don’t think so.

also, anyone glad the Cubs didn’t sign him for what he signed for are saying that because they’ve been conditioned by the Ricketts past behavior. The Ricketts can well afford to pay that salary and then some. They bought the Cubs for $800M the Cubs are worth north of $4B, that is a 500% profit.

baseball is an incredibly profitable business. Good on Ohtani.

I’m cool not being handcuffed by an expensive contract. Especially with the penalty’s for being over the luxury tax.

Curious what exactly the Dodgers do from here.  Obviously the answer is pitching but wondering how much more money they've got to throw at it.

Saw some people hand-wringing about Glasnow but I don't see it.  With that offense and how many injuries they already have on their pitching staff, I think they prioritize and durability.  Jordan Montgomery and Corbin Burnes maybe?  They could do that and still only be at that ~$270M mark where they've topped out the last few years.

Just get a team good enough to get to the playoffs. Short series, even 7 games, anything can happen. Not worried about that, at all. Cross that bridge if/when we get to it. And happy to have to worry about it.

Arizona JUST played in the World Series and they frankly sucked this year. LA is one Ohtani injury (and if you haven't noticed he will get hurt sometimes) from being no better than this year. And as you said playoff series are ridiculously random, hence Arizona in the World Series. This is hardly a reason to panic.

I absolutely wanted Ohtani on any deal possible. The Ricketts can pay it all, and he would have given the Cubs a better chance at winning another World Series every year he played.

Only other teams in all of sports that would touch 700m is Soccer clubs

Funny enough, Todd Boehly is a part owner of the Dodgers. And we’ve seen his spending with Chelsea. 😂

I guess I missed Jansen. I honestly asked the question because just off the top of my head thinking of their roster I didn’t come up with many home grown players who were regulars.

I think the problem is that you are only using what's off the top of your head. None of you have mentioned Cody Bellinger, who certainly falls within the parameters. I'm sure there are others.

Bidding against themselves

Yep. This is why it doesn’t matter to me if the Cubs came 2nd or 4th in his decision. There was really only 1 option. I don’t feel the Cubs look bad in this at all. The tried in the event he wasn’t tied to LA. He was, so they didn’t get him. Time to move on.

He really doesn't need to hit all that much to be worth starting with that defense.

Defense is great, but they seriously need some offense too.

Maybe the Ohtani contract works out, but that's a lot of money for a 30 yo coming off of surgery.  He's likely worth it based on marketing alone, but I can easily imagine this contract becoming an albatross.

People need to realize that Ohtani the player doesn't necessarily need to be worth 700M for this contract to be a success.  It's an investment for the Dodger's future. Kids in Japan will grow up watching Ohtani and the Dodgers on TV. The Dodgers will become the most popular MLB team in Japan. That will carry a lot of weight when future players get posted.

So apparently the Sharkk Tank guy is a CAA (Ohtani's agency) client as well.  Folks on Twitter are wondering if he was in on all the nonsense Friday and honestly not the craziest conspiracy theory I've heard.
