I wouldn't mind getting a linebacker at some point.  And project WRs who can sit for a season and try to break into relevance in 2024.  And honestly why not draft a longshot depth QB if you don't have one any given year?

Two for two.

Two 4s and Two 5s.

im guessing one interior OL, one DE/EDGE, one DB and one LB.

Then wild cards for the 7th rounders.

1-3 now, with an ILB taken. They have to take G/C or pass rusher next, no?

Unless they know they are going to spend some cap space on these positions this summer.

Another good value pick, I'm all for pushing Sanborn down the depth chart.

However, OIL is still a greater need and why I prefer Wypier.

We have under contract or draft control:

Jones/Jenkins/Whitehair/Davis/Wright

Borom/Patrick/Kramer/Leatherwood/a couple of random dudes from late last year and UDFA

I'd never turn down another one, but I don't think that's unreasonable to head into camp with.

Edge on the other hand is pretty miserable.

Anything's possible in the NFL, but at this point I think it's more likely neither of our 2023 firsts are top 10 than both are

Agree. The Bears considering a QB in that hypothetical next year would be contingent on JF not progressing as a passer, and thus being top 10. I don’t expect that to happen. NFC south is all horsefeathers, so who knows with that pick.

Another corner. I guess they either have real high hopes for their projects from last year, plan on trading for or signing somebody else’s castoff, or just don’t give a crap about getting to the qb.

I think it's the last one. We're betting heavily on coverage.

It's a losing bet, no way they'll be able to cover long enough, it's impossible in today's NFL.

For such an important draft it's been extraordinarily underwhelming, you'd think Poles might draft like his future with the Bears is at stake.

In addition the oline is a bit better off but surprised no centers or any other line depth as well. Oluwatimi from Michigan would have been an excellent Center choice in the 5th

Assuming that the Bears have punted on addressing defensive end, they should package their two 7th rounders to move up and grab Wypler in the 6th, then call it a day.

Too late.

They need more pass rushing talent as the roster currently stands, but the recent thinking is that coverage is more important than pass rush in today's NFL.  Coverage grades have a higher correlation with winning.

They obviously had next to no interest in Wypler.  That doesn't bother me.  I don't want a center who lacks strength.  No more pocket collapsing in Fields' face, please.

He ran his first offseason like he knew it didn’t matter if they won a game in 2022. He’s run this one not much differently. I think he’s very comfortable knowing that he’ll get a shot to make it work with Fields, and if that doesn’t happen, he’ll get a chance to draft his own QB. There’s no urgency to improve. They are happy taking baby steps and either let Fields carry them to contention or create a better team that will be prepared to win when they eventually find their guy.

they’re probably most happy with the fact they have two firsts next year, plus other extra picks.
2024 will have a lot of flexibility and they still won’t really need to commit to Fields by then.

if they suck again this year then Poles might start drafting for his own job.

I think this team is way way better on paper than it was at this time last year.  If they're not at worst flirting with a playoff spot going into the last week, then either Poles or Fields isn't the guy, depending on how we got there

I don't remotely see the comparison between last offseason and this one.

2022:
Biggest free agent signing:  Justin Jones at 2 years, 6m per year,.
Major trade acquisitions: None
Picks in the top 4 rounds:  3

2023:
Biggest free agent signings:  4 new starters ranging from $21m to $72m in total contracts
Major trade acquistion: DJ Moore
Picks in the top 4 rounds:  5

Last year was a complete bottoming out of the team's talent level. This year they've brought in literally half a dozen guys better than anyone they brought in last offseason.

You can criticize the decision to bottom out last year. You can criticize their priorities in how they spent their money.  You can criticize their draft decisions.  But I don't see how you can say this offseason resembles last in terms of lack of effort.
