2019 was not Schwarber's last season with the Cubs

Last full season. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal to ignore a weird pandemic shortened 60 game season especially when it was an outlier compared to the rest of his career.

I'm not trying to relitigate the actual decision to keep Schwarber or claim his 2020 was absolute proof of his level at the time, but in the context of being surprised at the claim that Washington 'fixed' him, it definitely matters that he was near replacement level in 2020.

Here is his fWAR the last 5 seasons:

2.5

2.0

0.3

2.8

2.7

It looks like 2020 is a clear outlier and that his performance only improved marginally since leaving the Cubs. Or I guess you could argue he was on a clear decline with the Cubs and then Washington saved him lol.

I mean, 2020 is a clear outlier because fWAR is an accumulative stat and there were about 1/3 of the games that season.

Right so he's 0.9 wins roughly over the full season. Still an outlier, possibly due to the weirdness of the pandemic season. Javy and KB also had really poor years (as well as stars on other teams like Arenado). They both bounced back at least somewhat the next year.

I will not accept anything from 2020 up to and including the Dodgers being World Series champs.

Exactly. Bernstein had a guest on yesterday. Bernstein said the Dodgers are a dynasty LOL. They have made the playoffs 8 or 9 straight years and several 100 win seasons. The guest who I forgot who it was said they only won one world series and it was from a 60 game regular season. The problem with the Dodgers is part of it is dumb baseball luck of a short series, but I think the grind of 162 wears them down, something a 60 game regular season didn't.

The one thing about using fWAR is that it includes defense, which he is terrible at (and apparently this was his worst year)

If you go by wRC+:

115

119

91

145

128 (it could also be noted that he had a very bad start, and had 140 after June 1st)

Just looking through the rest of the page, the one thing I see is that he's swinging at a lot less pitches outside the zone:

22.0%

24.0%

26.8%

20.6%

21.6%

Now whether that's lead to him getting more pitches in the zone or it's due to getting more pitches in the zone, I don't know.

I feel like losing games 4-2 and 3-2 isn't some massive blow out that shows they aren't competitive. Game 2 was legit a difference of one bad pitch.

A 4-spot for the Padres in the top of the 1st, looking good for them. Not so fast - the Phillies have put up 3 already in the bottom of the 1st and have a man on second with nobody out. Both starters knocked out without completing an inning.

I horsefeathering love this series.

I'm tempted to say this series is over because you can't win three straight against the Phillies with Wheeler/Nola/Suarez going...but the Cubs just did that a month ago

I know it's an uphill battle to get baseball players as famous as football and basketball players but considering Bryce was already #1 in MLB does this postseason get him the rest of the way to being like football famous?
