Sorry to steal the thunder from the Regular Season Rumors thread but it seems like its getting serious (though its Bowden) and worth its own thread

I'm on board with this if the price is low.

Is Hamels as washed up as Haren? IIRC Haren was washed up because injuries killed his stuff. Hamels just seems old and playing in a hitter's park. His road ERA is considerably lower than his home numbers (I KNOW WHERE HAVE WE HEARD THAT BEFORE?)

It's even more dramatic than Chatwood (.911 OPSA at home vs. .697 on the road. 6.41 ERA at home, 2.93 on the road)

He has a tolerable HR rate when he’s not pitching in Coors Jr

I've seen the science on the Texas pitchers and I'm willing to gamble on long man innings out of our 6th best RP with Chavez, but I'm not willing to trust a rotation spot to it.

I'm willing to trust Chatwood's rotation spot to almost literally anyone in MLB at the moment. Bring on Hamels.

Leaving that park alone should conceivably make him better on some level. He's been much better on the road anyway. Go ahead and grab him, I've lost any hope of adding someone actually good, since KB is hurt and we need our ML depth. Might as well add depth. Go ahead and grab Diekman too, I guess, and fire Duensing into the sun.

I think there's a non zero chance we're going to a 6 man during August. I think we're playing like 53 games in 56 days or something.

I think a 6 man is very much in play as well

in his last 5 starts cole hamels has a 10.23 ERA and has made it past the 5th inning once. so i guess what i'm saying is he'll fit right in.

How many of those starts weee in Texas?

Hamels' homerun problem screams fluke IMO. If it truly is a fluke, he's a slightly above average starter who should cost very little to acquire. That's a massive upgrade over Chatwood. If his homerun problem is not a fluke, he's still a little better than Chatwood on a rate basis plus he will throw an extra inning+ per start.

I would love someone more fun like Gausman or Stroman, but we're in a position where mediocrity like Hamels will absolutely help.

three. against oakland, the white sox, and the padres. the two road starts were against the orioles and the tigers.

i'm not 100% against signing him, because it means chatwood's days in the rotation are hopefully numbered, unless they do go to a six-man staff. and it sounds like the cost is minimal. but i don't know that it's going to help us much.

CAVEAT: I know this probably isn't a real thing.

But.

Hamels strikes me as the kinda guy who has been more or less playing out the string down in Texas. They haven't been in contention in forever, he got his big contract, etc. Bring him to a playoff team, give him a shot at cracking an October rotation one more time in his career...maybe you'll start to see a little more out of him.

I will admit to thinking the same thing.

I have no idea what his numbers this year look like but I hate Chatwood and have memories of his no hitter vs. us so much that I’ll take him
