It's especially glaring when compared to Trout, Betts, and Judge, which is maybe the best outfield of all time.

Slow down there. Many of the All-Star games in the 50’s had an NL outfield of Mays, Aaron, and Musial.

I don't care enough to dig into it, but I imagine the seasons Trout, Betts, and Judge are having would be tough to match, even for those 3.

quickly glancing at baseball reference for 1955:

musial - 6.1 bWAR

mays = 9.1 bWAR

aaron - 6.3 BWAR

or 1957:

musial - 6.1 bWAR

mays - 8.3 bWAR

aaron - 8.0 bWAR

as of today:

trout - 6.9 bWAR

betts - 5.4 bWAR

judge - 5.0 bWAR

I'm kinda shocked this is the first all star game for Markakis. He had some great years for the Orioles.

His stats have always been pretty workmanlike; nothing fancy enough to be noticed by All-Star voters. Those late 2000's Orioles teams didn't have too much though, so there might be some slight surprise that he was never sent as the obligatory pick. Looks like the Orioles had obligatory selections in 2008 (George Sherrill) and 2010 (Ty Wiggington).

Lahair also wasn’t a forced entry since Castro made it too. Makes it way more hilarious.

That’s why I put that gif.

These guys are on a pace to pass those legends this season

Hopefully Baez does something amazing during the All-Star game. Other fanbases don't realize just how special a player he is.

I mean we're not even surprised when he steals home anymore...

I think the Giants and the Dodgers kinda get it after the 2016 playoffs.

I will never forget him stealing home against the Dodgers. Maybe my favorite play of all time.

I recall the Cubs trying to trade for him or people wanting to trade for him or something.

Agreed. The absolute split second decision to deke like he was going back to the bag to draw the throw and immediately take off for home has to be the most ingenious play I've ever seen on a baseball field and he did it seamlessly.

Ah yes, the fabled Hendry-MacPhail connection that never materialized into anything worthwhile, but meant that all our trade chatter was constantly about the Orioles.

And then pretty quickly after we hire competent people for the front office, they traded Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger for Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop.

His slide against Toronto was the best “deal with it” slide of all time.

Every time this gif gets posted I watch it like 30 times in a row and it just never becomes any less majestic.

Lester slated to pitch Sunday per Cubs.com. Guess that means he can't pitch in the ASG, right?

Correct.

Good! Allows Joe to set up rotation the way he wants for the 5 game set against the Cards.
