Come on, be over 50 mil

Does it matter for us? I was under the impression he just had to sign to max out our compensation.

Yeah he just has to sign for the Cubs to get a pick. Doesn't matter what the amount is.

The amount determines the round. If it's over 50 million it's the comp round between round 1 and 2, less than that it's the comp round between rounds 2 and 3. It's the approximate difference in getting pick 33 or 73.

Wait, are you sure about that? I thought the Cubs were unable to get a compensation pick after round 1 (between round 1 and 2) due to our market size?

I'm so confused right now...

Compensation picks are not the same as competitive balance picks.

Obviously knew this day was coming for awhile but it’s still sad

Yeah, it's kind of sad but we all saw it coming. We've had time to prepare. At least he didn't go to the Cardinals like Dexter.

Aren’t they receiving the 75th pick (or around that) for Davis, who signed for over $50 million?

Yeah, I know. I meant compensatory picks for losing a FA. The Cubs never get competitive balance picks.

I'm pretty sure the Cubs will never get a compensatory pick after the competitive balance round A (after the 1st round). I thought our compensatory pick comes after competitive balance round B (after the second round).

You're right, when I saw that in double checking I thought Davis was under 50 million. The 50 million distinction is if you're a revenue sharing recipient, so Arrieta would be comp round B regardless.

I may be misremembering but I feel like over the last two-three years Jake made some rather cocky quotes about what would happen when he reached free agency that probably didn't age well.

You can only feel so bad for a guy being paid what will probably be in the 70M neighborhood, but I was hoping Jake would get more.

The rumored extension the Cubs were offering was probably worth more than what he is receiving from the Phillies.

Yeah, Boras and Arrieta messed up and are probably pissed about what happened.

I don't think I'd be results oriented on this. It was probably the right move at the time, even if it didn't work out.

Good for Jake. Sad to see him go, hope he gets $75-90 mil here. Glad he didn’t go to the Nats, Brewers or Cardinals Edited by Cubswin11

I was more concerned with Jake joining the Nats than the Cardinals, but I'm glad he didn't go to either.

i loved jake when he pitched really well for the cubs but i always thought he was kind of a douche.

i don't wish him ill will but that fact - along with i think he's perhaps set for marked regression - make me not the least caring about this.

all said, he's been dead to me since the cubs were eliminated last year. (but thx jake for the memories)

i miss dexter so much more

maybe you're right, but a guy who more or less came out of nowhere probably should have been more self aware about short shelf life of pitchers and his inevitable return to earth.
