This thread has become such a let down every time I open it. And not just because Darvish hasn’t signed yet. :(

Yup. I think some posters actually enjoy making new posts here just to disappoint people looking for legit Yu Darvish news. At this rate, this thread goes strong all the way up to spring training and maybe beyond...

[please also note this post added no actual value either]

ETA: while i hope for new news about yu (poet and didn't know it!) i am never really disappointed when mojo posts something weird, derwood does his derwood thing, etc. i don't know, maybe i just love y'all and stuff. it's a boring ass time of year anyway - slow offseason or not - so i'll take anything i can get

I have it from a completely unreliable source that Yu Darvish is a member of this site and reads it daily. He hasn't signed yet because he finds this thread funny, and he never wants the funny to end.

It’s Nightengale and not all that new of news but he thinks we end up with Darvish for 5/125 and he wants something like 6/130 that Cueto got. I mean I know Theo might just have his principles and know he’s really only bidding against himself but just give him the exact Cueto deal and add ~$10 million and be done with this horsefeathers.

RHP Yu Darvish

He was eyeing that Zack Greinke six-year, $206.5 million deal, or perhaps that seven-year, $217 million David Price pact of 2015. He’s not going to get close to either. But he will be paid.

Darvish has several teams who have offered five-year deals, and he would like to at least get the six-year, $130 million contract that Johnny Cueto received two years ago with the San Francisco Giants.

Three teams badly need him - the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers - but he continues to wait to see if the New York Yankees or Los Angeles Dodgers can move some contracts to make it work.

Considering he has no desire to sit out all season before those two teams can clear money to stay under the luxury tax, there’s one team that stands out among the rest.

Destination: Chicago Cubs, five years, $125 million.

6/130 would be a $21.7M AAV. That's actually better for the Cubs than 5/125. I doubt that's the difference between the two camps.

It could be that we are at 5/110 or something and he’s at 6/160. The 5/125 was the predicted deal by Nightengale. But overall I agree go to a 6th year at 130-140 to keep the aav down a bit rather than 5/125.

god, our first news in two weeks and it has to be from nightengale?

we’re all actually in the bad place.

We have all been in an alternate universe since the Tuesday after the Cubs won the world series

I wonder if Darvish is going to end up taking a 1 year deal and try again next offseason.

Would that deal really be any more available than a Greink/Price deal he had his sights on? I’d assume he’d want a $30-40 mil deal in that case, who’s doing that? Most teams that are in on him want him for their current 3+ year window. The only teams that could or would offer the one year deal would be a rebuilding team like the Padres maybe to flip him at the deadline and then you’re paying $15-20 million for a prospect?

I know you're not advocating that he adopt that strategy but man, that seems awfully risky for a dude who's had TJ surgery and at least one other extended bout of "elbow inflammation."

Also, count me in the camp that would be totally fine with 5/$125 or whatever. And while I'd obviously prefer not giving a 6-year contract to a 31 year old with a not-100%-clean injury history, I'd rather have him for 6 years than Arrieta for 5 or 6 or Cobb for 4/$72 or whatever.
