I know you're not advocating that he adopt that strategy but man, that seems awfully risky for a dude who's had TJ surgery...

Also, count me in the camp that would be totally fine with 5/$125 or whatever. And while I'd obviously prefer not giving a 6-year contract to a 31 year old with a not-100%-clean injury history, I'd rather have him for 6 years than Arrieta for 5 or 6 or Cobb for 4/$72 or whatever.

Agreed with all of this. I think teams are not offering him a 6th year most specifically because of the TJ surgery, seems reasonable to me, while Darvish believes $125 should be $150 or even $160 if he is taking 5 years which also shouldn’t be crazy all things considered except for that gd salary cap. I really horsefeathers the luxury tax/salary cap nonsense and want it to go back to the hell it came from.

If Yu wants more years but isn’t getting it, offer him an opt out after year 2 or 3. If the opt outs have been included in a 5 year deal - what the hell is he waiting for?

Here's an outside the box idea.... If Darvish/Dodgers really want to get back together, tell the Dodgers we'll take Kemp and Ryu all their salary but we need Walker Buehler to do that, throw in a prospect or something going back if needed. They are essentially trading Ryu/Kemp/Buehler for Darvish. Then we can go a few routes, go sign a remaining FA SP (even just a Hellickson until Buehler is ready), hold and develop Buehler and let Monty/Ryu start the year as the 5 until he's ready or turn around and trade Buehler, Happ and prospects for Archer.

Maybe take Ellsbury, 3/68M left, make the Yankees pay what they can so we both stay below LT (if possible). We keep Darvish out of our league and get a couple of the Yankees pitching prospects. I know it's silly, but Darvish isn't dying to be here, so I don't want him on this beautiful team....until he signs and says all the right things.

Me every time this thread is bumped:

Thanks for recycling my joke. :hello:

But it’s SOOO clever it bears repeating.

(And also I either missed it the first time or forgot it. )

This thread is basically three months of internet refuse so it’s pretty ripe for meme faux pas.

The Brewers apparently have the best offer now but it’s going to take a “good amount” to lure him. How are we still at this point????!?!!! Seems the offers are what they are and have to be damn near best and final by now. Make a decision dude.

Word from the Darvish camp is that he’s holding out for a similar contract that Jimmy G got from the Niners 5/$137.5.

But only $90M guaranteed? DONE

I'm going to be pissed if the Brewers end up signing Yu Darvish.

The Cubs better top that offer or maybe take Yu Darvish on a tour of downtown Milwaukee lol.

At least if he goes there it sounds like they’d have to really overpay to get him and if they do he’d pretty much max out their payroll for the foreseeable future. That being said I hope/think this news about the Brewers having the top offer was leaked to get us to up ours a bit and we just go and up whatever we gotta do (5/130? 6/150?) and get this horsefeathers done.

I think you’re underestimating the possible entertainment value of the highest payroll in Brewers history struggling to a third place finish.

I've got faith in Theo and Jed.

There are more SP candidates out there than there are other teams competing to get them. We'll get a guy we like on a deal we like even better. Whether that's Yu, or Jake, or Cobb. I'll be perfectly content.

Pretty sure Yu wouldn't want a no trade clause in his contract if he signs with Milwaukee. More like a you must trade me clause.
