I really don't want to make excuses for anyone who batters/threatens women but I do pause a bit when its someone from a shitty background like Cuba. How much education did Chapman receive as a kid? What kind of family structure was he provided with?

Again, my stomach turns even typing this out that it appears that I'm defending the guy, but its not like he's a frat boy or Ray Rice or something, someone with a college education. Of course it doesnt' excuse any bad behavior, but some of these guys don't have the same upbringing we all did, and young people do make mistakes.

We wouldn't do this without an extension, right? RIGHT?!?!

There's no way Theo gives up Torres for 2 months of renting Chapman. There has to be an extension.

He went through the legal process and served his suspension, but I don't want the Cubs to trade for him and I don't want him on the team. Of course I will be happy when he does well, but that doesn't really change the equation for me.

From Chapman's view, do you really give up the chance at free agency to sign what would be like a reasonable deal? I suppose with some of the baggage, but I don't think teams care enough to not offer him a ton of money after the season.

If he is willing to sign an extension then I am okay with this from a baseball perspective. It sucks from a personal standpoint since hes a dbag but if we win the World Series then I can easily overlook that.

This is the first time I've been really disappointed in this front office. This absolutely sucks on every level.

Most Twitter mentions of the deal I've read say it's pending an extension. This is going to turn my stomach a bit.

Yeah I don't see him or his agent being willing to sign an extension now and there's really no incentive for him to do so.

Chapman has already made a lot of money, close to 50 million if my understanding of his Reds deal is right. He could very well be okay with something approaching market value if he knows he's very likely to get multiple title shots. Also as a reliever you never want to turn away from a lot of guaranteed money, even if it is only a few months until free agency.

Okay, I'm now excited about this if an extension comes with him.

Yeah that would change everything. He could really fulfill Gato's dream of joining the Cubs rotation down the road. And 4/60 does seem somewhat in the ballpark for a guy who's only proven he can be a BP guy, if we're questioning the legitimacy of the report. Seems maybe a little light, particularly in years, but if he really came at that price I'd turn cartwheels.

As far as trading Torres even without an extension, I'll trust the FO. They haven't made a deal yet to trade a top prospect for a short term guy and if they think this is it then I'll guess they don't think Torres is the 100% bees knees. Or that's just what it'll take to get an absolutely wipeout guy, who if used right could make a sizable difference in close playoff games.

I'm normally not up for paying a premium for relievers, but if you're going to get one,I'm ok overpaying in A ballers for the 104 mph unhittable guy. If the FO is going to punt future value for the possibility of current success in a season where the ship has recently been a bit leaky then who am I to not just enjoy the ride along with them?

i totally, 100%, understand everyone's hesitation with the deal. at this point in my life, i've been able to split up the person vs. the player. chapman the person is a huge piece of horsefeathers, no doubt about that. thankfully, i don't have to spend any time with him or have him around my house. he's an awesome player and i'd love to watch him help my team win. not saying that's the right way to approach it at all, but on a moral level this trade wouldn't impact me that much. i've rooted for terrible people most of my life, because a lot of athletes are shitty.

We don't know his thinking. This is a guy who fired off a gun in his house and allegedly beat his girlfriend. So......

Yeah. That's how I am, too. It's a lock that people cheer for athletes every day not realizing that some of them are douches, cheaters, drug abusers, possibly killers.

horsefeathers man. I don't even really know what Chapman did or did not do. Florida never even charged him with a crime.

Yeah, not condoning athletes, or anyone, being a scumbag or piece of horsefeathers. That having been said, where do we draw the line? Where do you put your foot down and say "you can only be 7/8's a piece of horsefeathers, but if you go the full way, then I can't reconcile that."

Hell, every single person here has cheered at least once for John Lackey at some point this season. Most of us have been around here in one way or another when Ben Christensen was part of our org. Its professional sports, not a season of The Bachelor with your daughter the "star". Edited by JennieGarthAlgar

He can still be a piece of horsefeathers, but I don't have to root for him. To me, the Cubs winning with him doesn't lessen it or anything; he's just the [expletive] who came along for the ride.
