Man, Seattle is humid as [expletive]; humidity is NOT a fat man's friend.

um have you ever been here?

Spend 5 minutes in Des Moines in July and then run a marathon in Seattle today and compare the sweat stains after each.

Seattle is humid in the winter. It's dry in the summer.

I bet Sulley would eat the [expletive] out of a Froot loop doughnut

The donut is the luxury of the ruling class. How many Froot Loops are wasted on a single donut that could have been distributed to the masses to benefit the proletariats?

Who gives a horsefeathers about Des Moines? Sounds like a horsefeathers hole.

But I was wrong, Seattle:

Apparently they have a special type of humidity that doesn't suck. I just saw those humidity percentages on the weather reports and cringed.

not a happy call

Well, he was getting told that he gets to leave Iowa to go play in the major leagues, so I'm sure he wasn't too upset.

DSM Iowa is a nicer city than Tacoma and it ain't close (sorry tiger). But losing the chance to play with the Cubs in September and be around for all the glory years is what I meant. It's not likely he's going to the 90s Yankees or something. The Ms suck.

It was a baseless drive-by on Iowa on my part. My brother lives in Des Moines. I like it a lot.

Yeah, I like this a lot. Been a good reliever this season. Former top pitching prospect who was a starter. Lots of years of control left. Def. still a chance Bosio works his magic and he turns into what people thought he could be 5 years ago so there's that upside. I think the stuff's always been there.

The AAA pitcher is more emergency depth which is helpful.

Vogelbach's obviously been trade bait for a while to an AL team.

Montgomery was recently stretched out and moved to the rotation for the Mariners. Are we sure he's going to the pen? May be going with 6 starters the way extra rest was effective for the guys this time thru the rotation.

Cubs president Theo Epstein said the Cubs plan to use Montgomery out of their bullpen.

"Obviously, we've been looking hard to improve the pen if we could, especially looking for a left-handed pitcher," Epstein said. "Montgomery is somebody who has really good stuff who has been performing well this year that we think has been coming into his own a little bit. We're really pleased to get him in what we think is a fair deal.

"He's someone who has a chance to help us this year and long into the future. We paid a price to do that. We traded a couple of really good prospects for him. I think it's a fair deal for Seattle and for us, as well."

I just finished Sharma's article on the trade that had some pretty extensive Theo quotes, and there wasn't a mention of him being a starter, not even in future seasons. I think it's safe to say that he's viewed almost exclusively as a reliever for this season.

nobody even hugged the guy, must not be well liked, potential cancer in the clubhouse situation

So you're saying Lester will fight him and win?

I'm still down for trading for Chapman. Obviously, we got a young lefty pen arm that is controlled for awhile. So Miller's probably a no-go, especially considering the asking price. This was a big horsefeathers you to Cashman and his demands. But, he might come crawling back once they start floating Chapman's name about. Toss him some leftover Candelario-type pieces and see if he bites.

Theo, quoted in the Sharma article:

“We kind of separated them into different buckets,” Epstein said of how he and his staff approached the relief market. “The guys who are established impact guys right now and obviously have a higher price tag. And we’ll still be in on those guys, we’re still interested in improving the ‘pen if we can. And then the younger, controllable pieces, including guys who we think have a chance to start down the line and Mike certainly fits into that category.”

So they aren't necessarily out on the Miller/Chapman/etc types and it sounds like they do think Montgomery could start, even if they don't currently plan to use him that way.

Montgomery has a shot at starting like Andrew Miller had a shot at starting with Boston when they first picked him up. My guess is they hope he is maturing and can be a full inning power lefty like Miller became under their PD staff. They did wonders for Miller's delivery, night and day really, and hopefully they can improve Montgomery's delivery and command almost as much.

That's a decent enough idea. He had a dominant stretch from mid-April til the beginning of June, where he gave up 1 ER in 25 innings with an 18:4 K:BB. And a 2:1 GB:FB ratio.

Theo mentioned not involving anyone they're talking about in other deals. Even mentioned "bigger". I'm sure they'd still love to add Miller. But its obviously going to be their terms, as Cashman's heart just sank, seeing this deal. Welcome to being a seller, Brian.

I'm with Gato......If we're adding something big, I really hope its an SP now. Between Montgomery, Matusz, and Nathan, we've helped the pen quite a bit. Not to mention, CJ showing up. By all means, add more......But it doesn't need to be a major deal. Find a cost controlled SP, if possible.
