Is Pitcher

Is in Low A

Is not pitching overly well in Low A

Is Pitcher

Gonna look forward to the prospect clutching about that one, if that is in fact the lead piece.

As much as we like to devalue pitching prospects, ones with true ace upside are exceedingly rare.

The next 2 1/2 weeks is the reason I hate Twitter. I'll try not to mention that more than several times a day

I will trade ace upside pitchers struggling to get hitters out in Low A for good but less than ace upside major league pitchers 10 days a week. If Cease weren't hurt and pitching even better than he is now, I would trade him in a millisecond for Pomeranz or Teheran and laugh my way to victory.

Cease and is several tiers below Espinoza. Of course no one would care about losing Cease for good pitcher.

Okay, make it literally Espinoza then. Espinoza is getting licked by the Sally league, outside of HR prevention there's nothing he's doing overly well unless you extremely discount his performance for age. He's throwing less than 4.5 innings per start so if he's tiring out it's the 2nd time through the order. He's also not improving mid-year, since June he has an ERA of about 6 and hitters have an .850 OPS on him in the last month. He already has people making Carl Edwards comments about his potential durability and future as a starter. He is so far from being a valuable MLB starter right now that considering him far above the value of an actual above average major league SP is venturing into the absurd.

I'm not against trading him entirely, I'm against trading him for a guy who is just now breaking out and has never thrown a full season. Is Pomeranz even going to last until the playoffs?

Yeah, I'm prett meh on Espinoza. Kopech is where it's at and even then [expletive] pitching prospects.

I am, OTOH, glad the Cubs did not trade for Pomeranz at this point in time. Overall I expect the Red Sox win the deal, but I would want the Cubs to land someome much more tested.

With this deal, I'm praying that we can use Underwood as the lead piece for Rich Hill.

This isn't some drastic overpay. Pomeranz is good, Espinoza is FAR away, which lowers his value. If anything, I'm thinking this bodes well for the SP market. They may be more reasonable than I'd have thought.

Oh, say that one more time...but slower and at a whisper. You get him that cheap and my dream of a Teheran, Hill, Gonzalez/Reddick deadline inches forward.

Uh...which two starters are you taking out of the rotation?

I don't disagree that Pomeranz is good. My only problem is I thought Espinoza would net a player with a more established track record who wasn't close to his career max IP totals. That being said, the odds are stacked in favor of Boston winning this trade.

The Pomeranz/Espinoza deal seems to make sense for both clubs, but as someone that is high on Espinoza ... I'm not a huge fan of it from the Red Sox perspective. That said, to get one of the better arms available ... if you are in contention, as the Red Sox are ... it makes sense. I'm not a believer that Kopech is a starter long term, but you still have him in the bank, as well as some other solid 2nd tier starters.

I wonder if this is a "one-off", though, instead of a sign of what the market will be. Both teams moved for what they "needed" - Padres gambled on upside, particularly with Pomeranz's injury and limited workload history. Will be curious. If it's a sign of the market ... I think it's overall, a positive sign that a 1for 1 deal like this was achieved for Pomeranz ... despite my intrigue in Espinoza.

After last year I have this irrational fear that this trade deadline is going to consist of Abad and that's about it. If the Cubs go out and basically do nothing, will you be upset?

Absolutely, but there's zero worry about that. Last year they were seeing what they had with Bryant and a roster led by he and Rizzo went all the way to the NLCS. This year is about overwhelming muhs now and for as long as possible.

They even admitted they weren't expecting the team to take off like it did so didn't go all in for improvements because it was a year ahead of schedule. In hindsight they probably regret that, but if you look at Theo's history, he's made a notable deal in basically every year his teams have been in contention.

2003: Scott Sauerbeck, Scott Williamson, Jeff Suppan. I was still living in Boston area at the team and definitely remembered fans being underwhelmed at the haul and I don't think any of them panned out (though Williamson saved all 3 red sox wins in the ALCS)

2004: Orlando Cabrera, Doug Mientkiewicz, Dave Roberts.

2005: Tony Graffanino, Alex Cora, Chad Bradford, Jose Cruz Jr

2006: So this was the exception. The Sox were 63-41 and a game up on 1st place at the deadline. They made no notable deals and, related or not, went 23-35 the rest of the way and finished well out of the playoff race. Theo is probably scared from that.

2007: Eric Gagne. Now begins a period of big deadline moves. Gagne was still seen as a huge game changer in 2007

2008: Jason Bay. Again, Jason Bay was still seen as a stud in 2008

2009: Victor Martinez, Casey Kotchman, Adam LaRoche, Chris Duncan.

2010: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Kevin Cash. OK a bit of a down year but Salty was their starting catcher for a few years

2011: Erik Bedard, Mike Aviles, Josh Fields.

So yeah I wouldnt be too concerned with Theo and co being silent at the deadline.
