After last year I have this irrational fear that this trade deadline is going to consist of Abad and that's about it. If the Cubs go out and basically do nothing, will you be upset?

Absolutely, but there's zero worry about that. Last year they were seeing what they had with Bryant and a roster led by he and Rizzo went all the way to the NLCS. This year is about overwhelming muhs now and for as long as possible.

They even admitted they weren't expecting the team to take off like it did so didn't go all in for improvements because it was a year ahead of schedule. In hindsight they probably regret that, but if you look at Theo's history, he's made a notable deal in basically every year his teams have been in contention.

I don't see why they'd regret it in hindsight, since the team took off after that point. Last year's team appeared to need help at the deadline. Barring another 2 weeks like the last 2, this one's doesn't.

Nothing = a small bummer

LHRP = fine

good SP = good

RP and good SP = great

yeah. and i'd be at less than small bummer if nothing happened.

Same, if some combination of Edwards, Nathan, Grimm, or Wood look good over the next few weeks, my only lament will be that there isn't a true LOOGY to replace Richard, which is the nitpickiest of complaints.

Astros pay 50M to completely block Alex Bregman.

Which probably means they're on the prowl for a SP of significance They're a great match for Sonny Gray, I think, with the Red Sox landing Pomeranz.

Gurriel is listed as a 3B/2B. Bregman is a SS/3B. They currently have Valbuena and Rasmus holding it down at 3B and LF. I suspect they'll be able to find room for both fairly easily when the time is ready.

Also, Is Gurriel really that good? He's 32 already, that seems like an awfully big gamble for such an old player with no exposure to the major leagues.

So I've been a big fan of trading for Rich Hill. But is this a guy we should give up a solid haul for? Since 2010, this is his inning count(minors included).......103, 24, 36, 38.2, 48.1, and 83 in 2015. He's at 79 currently. He threw 195 back in 2007 for us. He threw 199.1 in 2006 combined......

So, how many innings before he runs out of gas? I don't think a 6 man rotation slows it down nearly enough. Do you use him out of the pen? I guess that could work conceivably, but you don't even know how he'd react to it.

Any other ways you use him or is taking a shot on him rolling the dice one too many times?

Following tonight's obliteration of the White Sox with a line of 9IP 6H 0ER 0BB 13K, I'd like to once again vote for seeing what it costs to pick up Matt Shoemaker. His contact levels are down across the board, 1st strike is up and swings are up across the board as well.

Shoemaker is really good in Anaheim. He's really not very good everywhere else.

I've been trying to think of a good swap for Soler.....Odorizzi seems to steep. Moore? I could live with that. Drew Hutchison isn't enough. Gausman seems like a pipe dream. Daniel Norris? Seems light. James Paxton? I'm 50/50. Walker? They'd laugh, right? Nate Karns? He'd kind of fit our roster currently. But I think we can do better. Bettis or Chatwood from the Rox? I don't think that's the ticket. Would Archie Bradley be possible? If so, I'm in.

Anyone got other options for a trade like that? Theo saying he's looking out for cost controlled guys makes me think Soler is the bait, since he's kind of the odd guy out.

How is he the odd guy out? What am I missing?

I mean, how much time will he get when he's back? Heyward and Fowler play everyday(even if Heyward maybe shouldn't for now). Contreras is going to get at least 1 of every days out there and likely 2 most turns thru the rotation. KB and Zobrist are getting time out there, so Javy gets his time at 2B and 3B. Hell, even Szczur is going to get a spot start here or there. This doesn't even account for the possibility we don't DFA Coghlan or try and work Almora into games......

I just don't see where he's going to get AB's. Add in Schwarber coming back next year and its cloudy for him then too.

I'd think the Indians with Clevinger and someome like Sheffield or....:hides erection: McKenzie...makes a ton of sense. I'd take Norris and someone else or Bradley straight up from that and run, obviously Gausman or Walker. Paxton is someone I don't know what I think about as a SP so probably no.

I wasn't even considering trading Soler for minor leaguers. I KIND of doubt we'd do it now, but I'd be OK with it, if we did. Get a good pitching prospect for him and some semblance of a RHRP maybe......I'm unsure what to think about Paxton too.

Rich Hill, in what may be his last start as an A.....Blister pops and removed from the game, during the first batter he faces.

And that's why you never wait for the trade deadline

Buster Olney says that Billy was asking for Anderson Espinoza (Pomeranz trade) for Rich Hill. Good lord.

It seems like they backed down, but the Red Sox had moved on. I don't fault Beane for shooting for the moon early. My guess is Hill probably costs a team a 2nd tier prospect and a good A ball lottery ticket (or 2) in the end.

I do think that Oakland is better off trying to package Hill with someone else (say Reddick) and see if that could increase the return (a la Samardzija/Hammel in some respects). Happ does seem like the type of guy that they could like a lot.

Olney suggested it a bit ago and Gammons tweeted about it early this morning......Mentioning Buchholz and the Cubs. I mean, MEH to the extreme, but he'd be cheap as hell to acquire, lend depth(which may be the main thing we're after anyway) and was pretty solid just last season.

If we're rummaging through guys who haven't proven themselves as major leaguers, how much luster has Archie Bradley lost? He's not ideal(not a strike thrower, elbow injury in 2014), but the upside is what you'd need for it to be worth the gamble on someone less proven.

I also remain a Drew Hutchison fan, if the Jays are as ready to be done with him as their treatment of him implies.

I kinda like Wily Peralta of the Brrewers in this similar mindset. I think he could be an elite relief pitcher with his velo if he can't figure it out as a SP. Eovaldi too under this thinking.

It's a logical move and something I brought up awhile ago ... when I thought Buchholz could be fixed this season. At this juncture, he'd be more depth than anything. Still ... sure ... why not? Get him in, see if they can fix him and have an option for the rotation next season.

Still ... not sure the Red Sox part with him unless something turns around for another guy or they make another move. He's useful depth for them as well right now, as bad as he has been this year.
