Preferably it'll be his first under the field instead.

I thought he retired

He probably has some made up “ambassador” job with the White Sox or something he’s using as a technicality. Or he just thinks he’s so important that any time he talks baseball that counts as still working in it.

Please stop asking an unemployed old yutz what he thinks of a place he has nothing to do with anymore

Reminds me of when the print media used to ask Mike Ditka which ultra-conservative guy he was supporting in Illinois elections.

I always thought closing off Gallagher Way and the screen to people without tickets was a Cubs decision, but apparently they have been fighting for it to be open to all (and lost).

yeah the cubs always wanted that to be open and the neighborhood bars fought it. the original plan was for it to be open and then there were meetings with tunney and the neighborhood and crap and it came out that it would have to be closed to ticketholders only.

I guess they're finally gonna build this thing (there was something like this in the old renovation renderings that never got built - was supposed to house retail and a new version of the captain morgan club iirc)

Am I being very out of touch in wondering what the target audience for this even is? Doesn't everyone in Illinois just bet on sports through their phone? Seems like a hell of an expense to get the license just for....an advertising opportunity? Obviously they can sell $14 beers and still be fine, but who is going to actually go and place bets there?

drunk fans who want to watch the games while they bet? That's why people still go to Vegas sportsbooks even though they can bet on their phones, or why people go to Cubs games at Wrigley even though they can watch the games at home.

I'm jaded, of course, but I see these construction plans and can only think of another excuse for the Ricketts to cry poor.

I look at this and think that surely this one is the huge revenue stream that actually will be reinvested into major-league payroll.

But you can watch the game while you bet...from your seat. If you want to watch all the games you bet on, there are roughly 98 sports bars in a four block radius that don't have a cover charge of a game ticket.

I haven't tried yet because why would I bet on this team, but I thought the sportsbook apps do not allow betting on games when inside the stadium. Otherwise a fast finger could get ahead of line changes. Please note: I know nothing about the accuracy of geolocation and whether this is true.

I can speak to the fact that I bafflingly have friends who want to spend all day in a sportsbook for an upcoming Vegas trip.

I would assume the sportsbook wouldn't only be open during games (correct me if I'm wrong). Seems like there are a lot of people that would go to the sportsbook at Wrigley over some other place because its Wrigley

Who said anything about needing a game ticket?

Without quoting everyone, I've bet on the Cubs while sitting in the bleachers, so almost positive there's no block on that. Think Barstool even lets you bet on the next pitch result....generally the internet is so slow that you can't do anything, but believe it's allowed.

Good call on it being just another attraction in the neighborhood. All the other iterations of bars in that spot I believe were exclusive to people with tickets during the games, but obviously this could be different. Still not sure why there's more of an attraction there than your standard sports bar (and the Cubs would want to pay to get the license for it), but who knows...maybe Draftkings is covering all that for advertising purposes.

Vegas sportsbooks are fun for football weekends and March Madness just from the way all the TVs and odds are presented to you, plus the whole crowd atmosphere. But yeah, would never travel all the way out there just for that.
