I don't know which Ron Swanson gif best fits by reaction to this glorious lineup so I'm just gonna use a few

Reading through this thread, I feel like I'm the only one who's freaking out at the thought of Arrieta giving up some early runs and losing this game. I know this year has been very different, and they've come through in very big moments this season, but the pessimist inside me is still haunted from being in the bleachers for Loney's GS.

GAHHHH a 1-2-3 first inning and a 2 run KB homer would help ease some of these nerves.

Sure that's technically possible, but it's unlikely, less likely than any other pitcher (including Cardinals ones) melting down. There's a reason pepole are confident.

I don't want any walk offs, I want completely drama-free poundings for every game, honestly. Just win by 6 or 7 runs comfortably by the 5th inning.

Schwarber clearing the board in RF to walkoff the series would be incredible.

I think we'll see multiple players with big games for the Cubs with the wind howling out, but Bryant is going to go off now that we're back at Wrigley.

for cardinals fans like gordon wittenmeyer who keep throwing out this limp clayton kershaw storyline as to why we shouldn't be incredibly confident going into this game, how's this for a counterpoint: last wednesday, jake arietta threw 9 shutout innings against a better offense in an elimination game on the road

whereas tonight's game is against an offense near the bottom quartile of the league, at home, in a non-elimination game. i have literally no reason other than "[expletive] happens" to think anything other than aggressively confident thoughts about jake's upcoming pitching performance and the team's chances in to win

I'm confident Arrieta will leave us in a spot to win comfortably. Maybe he lets in a couple runs as he's human and all, but he should go deep and keep the score low.

If he gives up a run or two, no one freak out.

The wind blowing out is basically the worst possible thing to happen for STL. Arrieta has been masterful in keeping the ball down all season and there's little reason to think it'll change now.

If we hit as many dongs as we ought to this evening Arrieta might not even need to go 9.

If anyone goes to 2B, people will freak.

Well yeah, but what are the odds of that?

I think anything that introduces more unexpected variance is not a good thing for the Cubs. Sure Arrieta is better at keeping the ball on the ground and at avoiding HR, but if a fluke fly ball can lead to several runs with sequencing, that's a bigger equalizer for the team that's on the short end of the pitching matchup.

You know what I love about this Cubs team: 1-8 in this lineup every single player has my full confidence at bat

I even have confidence in Arrieta.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves here, but assuming we can close this out in 4 how would the rotation set up for the NLCS? Regular rest would put Arrieta as the Game 2 starter on Saturday, right? Then you can throw Lester in Game 1. If we can have that duo start Games 1-2-5-6, I like our chances against anyone.

If they win both the Wrigley games, you can go Arrieta/Lester/Hendricks/Hammel/Arrieta to start the NLCS. Game 1 of the NLCS is on Saturday.

Ah, my bad. For some reason I thought it was Friday.

Has anyone heard from backtobanks? I haven't seen any "boy genius" posts lately.
