Wow. No Aramis or Alvarez for Pittsburgh?

I knew there was a name or two missing. Sad for Aramis if the Pirates lose. Not that I give a [expletive] because that means the Cubs won

Aramis can pinch hit in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs down 9-0

How appropriate that Aramis ends his career hitting a meaningless HR in Wrigley Field!

Not a huge fan of La Stella batting 5 but I can see why it makes sense..Patient guy who makes contact and Can PH and get Jackson,Baez in there or whoever in place.

How many times has Montero caught Arrieta this year?

When Arrieta pitches...............

CUBS are 7-1 (.875) when Ross starts at catcher

CUBS are 17-7 (.708) when Montero starts at catcher

CUBS are 1-0 (1.000) when Teagarden starts at catcher

Pitt fans do not seem to be keen on Rodriguez at 1B....lol.

.666 career OPS, OPSing .642 this year. I don't know what is going on with their roster but it does seem like a pretty poor bat to put in such a premium offensive position

Per Levine:

Fowler CF

Schwarber RF

Bryant LF

Rizzo 1B

La Stella 3B

Castro 2B

Montero C

Russell SS

Arrieta P

What's the logic of Schwarber in RF and Bryant in LF or is that a typo?

LF is more difficult to play in Pittsburgh than RF

Gotcha! Thanks.

Has never faced Arrieta, either.

Cubs went with the offensive starting lineup, Pirates went with the defensive starting lineup.

I think offensive to start the game is a better idea but what do i know

At least with alvarez, I think the idea is that left handed batters are actually terrible against Arrieta--I'm assuming because of the cutter. On the radio this morning, I think I heard he has the lowest batting average against vs left handed batters in the league. So they mentioned that Alvarez might not be in.

or maybe he's saving alvarez for a high leverage spot or some dumb thing idk

I think I read somewhere the Pirates were going total defense and small ball for this game. Saying we might see them doing alot of bunting guys over, stealing and trying to squeeze them in since it figures to be low scoring and with Jake on the mound they will take anything they can get Edited by PrimeTime

Nothing like changing the entire way your team plays the game for #163.

if they're giving us 1-, 2-pitch outs, i'll be absolutely delighted; could mean an extra inning for Jake rather than gambling on Strop/Grimm/Wood meltdown possibilities

Yeah, I bet if they get people on, there will be a high probability they will try to steal. Hopefully montero doesn't bounce his throws tonight. No need to put anyone on third from a bad throw so that they can then squeeze the runner home.

This seems to be a purely avoid making a critical error in a huge game move and Alvarez has booted the ball plenty this season, even at first. Kind of a double edged sword for them, put in the defensive lineup to save runs because you figure it'll be a low scoring game while at the same time handicapping yourself with less offense and reducing the likelihood you do score many runs.

A defense from the Pirates perspective on Rodriguez (I don't find it very convincing but whatevs)

http://www.bucsdugout.com/2015/10/7/9473149/nl-wild-card-game-sean-rodriguez-in-pirates-lineup

"Scenario A: The Pirates get to Jake Arrieta early and have a 3-0 lead in the third.

Result: Rodriguez stays in the game as a sort of all-night defensive replacement; the Pirates don't risk Pedro Alvarez starting a Cubs rally with an error or two at first base.

Scenario B: Neither the Pirates nor the Cubs score the first time through the order, and it's 0-0 through three.

Result: The Pirates begin entertaining the idea of using Alvarez as a pinch-hitter almost immediately, and certainly have him pinch-hit for Rodriguez if Rodriguez is due to come to the plate when there's an opportunity to score.

Scenario C: The Cubs get to Gerrit Cole early and have a 3-0 lead in the third.

Result: Alvarez's defense no longer tops the Pirates' list of concerns, and he pinch-hits for Rodriguez or someone else at the earliest possible opportunity."
