BA had him at 7 right before he was promoted and there have been a bajillion big name promotions since then. Just find it hard to fathom when it was pretty predictable he'd struggle badly. But maybe I'm wrong.

But his promotion did happen and that disaster did happen. Other big name promotions happened, but other guys kept climbing the ladder and there was a draft and international signings as well. A hell of a lot of people had huge doubts about Baez before his promotion, when he stunk it up even beyond the doubters level of fear, that poked a lot of holes in the hope balloon.

Gallo is still considered a top 10-15 prospect for some reason. His contact problems are every bit as worrisome and Baez is a middle infielder.

He's been top 3 on most midseason lists from what I remember. BA and Law, not sure on FG.

if Raul Mondesi is a top-25 prospect, Baez for sure is

other BA top 25 prospects i probably wouldn't trade Baez for:

Joey Gallo, Alex Reyes, Aaron Judge, Jose DeLeon, Brett Phillips, Hector Olivera and maybe Barreto

Gallo [expletive] all over the minors at a greater rate, and he put out a respectable slash at the major league level.

based entirely on his first 11 games

.300.391/.625/1.016

Games 12-25

.149/.231/.298/.529

Gallo has also been much worse at AAA since his demotion than Baez has ever been.

.183/.279/.483

That's some [expletive], alright.

This is not at all related to Baez(or David Price), but I want to take this opportunity to say how excited I am for Alex Reyes to become the new Aaron Sanchez that everyone fawns over while ignoring he can't throw nearly enough strikes. This excitement is tempered by the worry that he'll get traded in a year or so for Carlos Correa or some such nonsense.

i'd say more AJ Burnett, who gives a team like a year or two of #2 production at random before FA and the rest of the time was spent with his arm in a sling or frustrating with his maddening inconsistency

A bunch of 13 game samples? And I have to imagine 183/279/483 gives a better MLE than 169/227/324

ETA: And of course Baez has been worse than that. He started out in AAA with a .142/.229/.255 over ~30 games.

Do we even have what it takes to put a package together? I'm thinking we might be better off just waiting until the off season so we don't have to trade anything but money.

I don't think I'm comfortable with trading really any of our valuable young guys. Boy, a Price/Cespedes packages would really blow my mind, though.

Did you even see what Detroit gave up for him with an additional year of control?

I actually couldn't remember and had to google it just now. Wow... that makes me a little more optimistic. If we could get Price to agree to an extension that would be sweet.

To be fair, I wasn't keen on the trade then, thinking it was great for Detroit, (I think), but in hindsight, they got a solid return. Adames last year isn't Torres this year ... but Adames last year isn't that far behind Torres this year. Smyly was a solid young starter throwing the ball well and having 3 arb years, and Nick Franklin was a former top prospect who had not figured out the majors yet but still had some intrigue. I mean ... the Cubs don't have a comparable to last year's Smyly, but we're looking at something like Torres/Alcantara/+ to get a similar package to what the Rays got last year (of course, for 2 cost-controlled years of an elite starter, you'd consider that deal). That Detroit system always managed to sneakily develop some intriguing under-the-radar guys.

As for Price, if they move him, sure, we could probably compete for him, and he might have interest coming here to join Maddon (weren't they close). They seem to want to reload moreso than rebuild, though, so I'm not certain we're great fits, as our top prospects/young trade chips are still a bit boom or bust (like Baez), or too far away (Torres). Furthermore, they'd probably want some close to ready starting young pitching, something we don't exactly have a pile of.

Gallo had a total of like 4 good games in his first 13 and was pretty shitty the entire rest of the time he was up. I get it, because I think Baez probably sucks too but be serious here

But Price didn’t want to get into the idea of reuniting with Maddon when asked about free agency again during last week’s All-Star festivities in Cincinnati.

“I’m not gonna answer those questions,” Price said. “You guys are going to get me in trouble, man. I love being a Tiger. I have fun at the field every single day. Wherever I’m playing baseball next year, it’s not going to be because of a manager. I promise you that. It’s not gonna be the reason why.”

To me, he only says this if he knows deep down already what he plans on doing. He has serious interest in playing for the Cubs. A hometown discount would be nice.

I think seeing Javy firsthand with his opening series in Colorado and what he turned into gave me PTSD

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/07/22/levine-cubs-tigers-have-talked-about-david-price/

(CBS) — Will there be a sale in Detroit and a Price reduction? The Chicago Cubs wasted little time this week reacting to the sudden availability of left-handed ace David Price, according to multiple sources.

Like sharks in a fish tank, Chicago Cub president Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer were among the first to inquire about Price. Earlier in the week the Tigers, for the first time in a decade, had decided to be sellers by the impending deadline for non-waiver trades July 31.

Although at least eight clubs will kick the tires on a deal with Detroit for Price, the Cubs system, flush with blue chip prospects, may be the best match up for the Tigers. The soon-to-be 30-year-old pitcher will declare for free agent status the first week of November.

jesus christ you know the prospect hoarding/love has gone too far when matt spiegel is tweeting about how he wouldn't want to give up guys like vogelbach, edwards, or jimenez for 11 starts of david price for a playoff chase and subsequent run

As a known Javy guy, I think I'd give him up for Price.(but I'd be pissed if we couldn't find a way to extend him)

Torres? Sure thing. Same with McKinney.(not both though) 1 plus an Underwood or CJ and I wouldn't blink.

I dunno, considering ppl say McKinney cant play CF, i'd give him as main piece for Price

Something like

McKinney

Edwards

Lake

Castro

for

price

and

Vogelbach

Lake

Olt

for Zobrist

keep all the bats...unless they suck?

or keep all the bats?

No, keep all the bats.

DONT TRADE BAEZ unless you get a TOR young pitcher in the deal.

I'd do 1 of Torres/Baez, McKinney and any pitching prospects they want because F pitching prospects

You'd give up 2 top 40 prospects for 11 starts? That's absolute madness.

You're offering an insane amount for 2.5 months of Price. The going price will not be anywhere near that high.

Castro is a dump of salary and McKinney has no place on the cubs... he cant play CF.

He can play LF, where at the moment we do not have a long term option. Sure Bryant or Schwarber could end up there, but right now they aren't, and as such MCKinney profiles as our future LF'er until Bryant and Schwarber prove they are disasters at their current positions
