Carassco would be an excellent pickup for Cubs rotation. Solid #3 with arrow pointing up. Could cost them Baez.

yes, he just referred to carrasco as a #3

For us he would be.

Moving Castro makes sense from a baseball and a business perspective if Baez hits .220. But the parallel between Lou Brock at the 1964 deadline and Castro today makes me weary from a totally irrational standpoint.

Lou Brock had 7 seasons where he had more WAR than Castro has ever had through year 6. I think we're ok.

fun fact

lou brock when traded was the same age starlin castro is now, only lou brock had 327 g and 1.6 career fWAR at the time.

in other words...uh weird point/comparison you just made.

Ross, Gyorko, Venable for Baez+?

if we're taking back gyorko they better be taking castro

Carrasco would be a terrific move, but Cleveland's supposedly been asking for the moon for him.

I'm willing to pay the moon for Arrieta 2.0.

but we'd also inherit his mistake of a contract

I also like to hang outside gas stations and offer to buy lottery scratchers after they've been shown to be winners.

lou brock MEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

wait are you really old enough to remember that?

No, but when you became a Cub fan in the early 70s that was always there. It was probably worse from '64-'68 when the Cards were playing in October.

But the playing careers and attitudes surrounding them contain a similar arc. Brock was 25, had been productive (remember the offensive context was different), had not "grown," the Cubs were in surprise contention, and felt they just needed one more established starter.

I understand that one thing has nothing to do with another.

As an aside, my grandparents had lived in St. Louis but my grandfather was working in Iran as the superintendent of Jewish schools (times have changed, huh?). They came back in late 1964 and bought the house that Lou Brock was trying to buy. As a kid I was told that story with the part that the seller didn't want to sell to him because a ballplayer playing baseball would break all the windows in the neighborhood. Made sense to me. Then I got older...

Many of us think that certain of the local media are unfair to Castro because of his ethnicity. Makes sense that Brock may have also been unfairly maligned which made it easier to trade him.

Maybe the big move is going to be taking a flyer on Bud Norris or Vance Worley.

I wouldn't be shattered if the Cubs waited until the waiver period when they get additional leverage.

That said, I have no qualms with a slight overpay for a legitimate asset.

Shockingly, Padres one of just five teams that haven't made a trade with deadline in 3 1/2 hours. Others: Cubs, White Sox, Twins, D'Backs.

Padres have more pieces and more suitors. They have contenders and non-contenders alike knocking on the door. Can't blame them for taking it too the wire.

If the Twins and Cubs don't do anything I'll be shocked. The White Sox are the team that should stand pat. Too close to sell, too far to buy.

Who says no to Soler, Baez, Zagunis/McKinney and CJ/Underwood for Carrasco and Brantley?

i think we do (not that i think it's right)

also, there's a huge gap between values of McKinney & Zagunis

Didn't the White Sox make a minor move yesterday?

I'm going for the heroin if Clayton Richard starts one more game for the Cubs while we "get additional leverage"

i'd guess Wada/Wood would be more likely

They were rumored to be in on a bat.

Put your seat belts on there will be a flurry of trades that are done but won't be announced until final hour according to several GMs
