Without an extension I can't imagine they're realistically in on Price.

I'd be perfectly fine with a McKinney/Zagunis/1 of PJ/CJ/Underwood for him knowing we should have money and his relationship with Maddon/Johnson.

I'd honestly wait until the offseason where it won't cost players. I'd like for them to get a guy like Hammels or Ross who they can hang on to if they are going to give up players. With Price its players and a [expletive] ton of money.

Dombrowski is pretty smart guy (he graduated from Western Michigan University, like me) and he will get premium talent back even though he's a rental.

Don't trade Baez, much less for Ross. That's a move that could well bite the organization in the ass in a big way. The kid has phenomenal talent, he's shown both the willingness and ability to adjust, and he's 22. That's a guy you build around.

I agree, 30 homer potential middle infielders dont grow on trees

Exactly. We're going to need a middle infielder soon, too. We can't keep trotting Castro out there, regardless of that contract.

It saddens me deeply that when it comes to Starlin Castro, we've already seen his peak in a Cubs uniform. I don't see him improving for us anytime soon, and at this point it just makes the most sense to include him in a trade to address our needs. I always liked Castro, and it made me feel a little sick today seeing him in the dugout talking and laughing with Rizzo after his HR. He was my favorite Cub for a good 4 year stretch, and now my brain is just viewing him as a trade piece, it's like I'm betraying him or something.

That having been said, ideally we trade some package of prospects plus Castro for a solid SP and a solid RP. There is no justification for Beeler or Roach or Richards to be in our rotation again this season. Period. I think the Padres could give us what we need and should like what we have to offer, but I read somewhere that they want Baez (no-go for me personally). Time for the if's associated with my vision for the Cubs:

-If we do manage to ship off Castro and keep Javy, Baez to the majors should happen the same day. Naturally, I want us to be in the playoffs this year and I want us to contend for the foreseeable future, and I think Baez in our lineup is best for both those ends.

-If we can make something happen with the aforementioned Castro package, it should address our immediate pitching needs and it also sets the stage for all of our cards to fall into place next year.

-If Baez has fixed his strikeout issues, and all signs seem to indicate he has, then our infield should be one of the top 2-3 in baseball as soon as next year.

Let's go front office. Patience is a virtue, but the team, as it is, has issues. We need another starting pitcher, one or two solid relief pitchers, and probably a decent center fielder to platoon/supplant Fowler. The influx of talent our system has seen under this administration means we have the tools to fix those issues, both by trade and by promotion. Make something happen.

Now, if we shop around and find we aren't going to get an acceptable return, I won't be irate if we stand pat at the deadline. It's nonsensical to trade the farm for lower tier players, and if that's all we can get anyone to offer before the deadline we shouldn't do it. Making the playoffs this year is a priority, but it is second on the list of priorities in my book, right behind winning a World Series in the next 3 years. If we have to wait until the offseason to sign the kind of high quality players it will take to fix our holes, so be it.

If we trade Baez for anybody (outside of Trout or Harper) I will be absolutely heartbroken. If he figures it out, he will easily be my favorite Cub.

Well that's silly

Can't help it. I have an irrational love for this guy. I don't care if he strikes out 300 times a year, as long as I get to see him pimp out 30 home runs.

You will not get to see that.

Honestly, it's not even about the number of home runs he hits. It's more about the total time it takes him to round the bases on said home runs. I want a guy that takes at least 3 minutes to get home after every home run.

Of course I'm being dumb, but I want to be the bad guys.

I don't think I've ever been this torn at a trade deadline before. I'd like to see a move, but the two likelest options seem to be trading Castro at the low ebb of his value, or trading Baez. And I really don't want to see either of those things happen.

Why do those seem like the two likeliest options?

Because God forbid they actually dare to move any of their precious, precious prospects when they don't have a 15 game-lead at the top of the division.

Why do you want to go back to the Jim Hendry Way so badly?

And nothing but gigantic contracts as far as the eye can see!

Exactly my feeling this year. At the same time, this doesn't seem like a FO that would sell low, especially chasing the 2nd WC. Also torn, but I see little happening with castro at the lowest value of his career.

the likeliest thing to happen is we approximate the Montero return possibly even post-waiver-deadline for somebody like Ian Kennedy, and do little else

I'm still hoping for a backend starter type, reliever, and bench bat.

I really think the Padres do something major in the next 36 hours and it's with the Cubs or Blue Jays.
