Chicago Cubs ‏@Cubs 3s3 seconds ago

#Cubs acquired RHP prospect Matt Brazis from @Mariners for OF Justin Ruggiano. Brazis is 8-6 w/ 14 SV, 2.89 ERA in 100 games over 3 seasons.

I know we have a glut of 4th-5th OF types but I figured Coghlan would be the one to go.

Brazis is a reliever prospect, but numerically he looks pretty good.

EDIT: The Seattle Times beat writer says that Logan Bawcom is included too, but he looks like Beeler-esque roster fill so not sure it matters: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=bawcom001log

And old.

does this free up a 40-man spot?

It should. Brazis only has three years in the minors.

Bawcom is just being DFA'd, not traded.

My friends owns are bar in Austin, he sent me a picture with Ruggiano at his bar down there last summer while Ruggiano was on the DL. Apparently Ruggiano said he didn't expect to be back next year

Apparently Brazis has nice stuff, but fell in the draft to the 28th round because he's a reliever and missed most of his junior year with injury.

Not that Ruggiano was great, but our OF kinda sucks now/has major questions. I hope they bring in someone better than Gomes and/or someone who can at least fake it in CF like Ruggiano.

Also, if they just sign Gomes after this and add no other OF it tells me they r near 100% certain Bryant is starting in LF once he comes up.

I would not have predicted that this week would see the cubs trade and OFer to make 40-man space for a FA RH reliever.

I don't know why anyone would think that. They are 100% certain that Bryant is going to play a position he has never played even though he just spent an entire minor league season at 3B? That doesn't make any sense.

It makes sense if they r trying to win games and maximize value. Valbuena 3B+Bryant LF > Bryant 3B+Coghlan/Gomes platoon

It's left field. You don't need experience to play it.

You do need some to play it competently.

The Cubs aren't going to be that short-sighted with their top prospect. If Bryant can play 3B, which they seem to think he can, he is much more valuable there than in LF.

Which is why he'll get LF reps in ST, and getting him more experience will be the pretense for keeping him in Iowa for a couple weeks to start the season.

Are we just ignoring his OF experience in college?

Ryan Braun, Alex Gordon, Alfonso Soriano in their first exposure to LF didn't fare much differently than in their subsequent seasons (Braun actually got substantially worse in years 2 & 3 but that could just be sample-size stuff making him seem more competent than he was in year 1

there doesn't seem to be much of a learning curve at all, moving to LF
