We need help on both lines (DE, arguably DT, C and T) and the back 7. Can we possibly fix all of that in one offseason without trading Cutler?

In theory you could, but you'd need a flawless off-season or a H. Walker type trade and I don't see that happening.

We dont need DT help. Thats the only strength of the defense. Try to bring everyone back and go from there.

I'm guessing we'll retain Paea for a cap hit around 5M. Rookie pool is conservatively 5.25M. Should leave us with around 20M to spend and two picks in the top 45. That money and those two picks are how you have to fill our needs. Somewhere you're gonna have to take a flier on a cheaper vet in the buy low category or plug a niche role with the lower round picks.

Oh and I think good coaching can help up everyone's game, even the ones that aren't holes now.

Some CBS mock drafts:

Rob Rang has the Bears taking Florida DE Dante Fowler at 9. Passed on Notre Dame OT Ronnie Stanley who went 10 and Washington OLB Shaq Thompson who went 21: http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock-draft

Dane Brugler has the Bears going with Alabama S Landon Collins - Dante Fowler went 14, Baylor DE Shawn Oakman went 15 and Thompson went 17: http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock-draft

Stanley is the read deal. Tough to pass him up. Really starting to like the thought of going 3-4 and taking Fowler and then trying to get a S in the 2nd. I don't know about Collins in the top 10, plus I think the Bears need a S than can really cover.

Wait, Ronnie Stanley is a top 10 pick? As a Notre Dame fan, that blows my mind.

I'm nervous of taking a strong safety at the top of the draft. He's got to be a Sean Taylor type of player for me to be okay with that.

This team can use a FS with range more importantly then a SS if you went that route.

Local reports (CBS) have it that the Bears upper level management met on Monday and decided to fire Trestman after the season ends. No decision on Emery yet.

I assume this was the same report based on a Bernstein tweet we discussed yesterday.

Someone, somewhere is throwing Shanahan 's name around as a potential replacement for Trestman. It was discussed yesterday on Mike & Mike on ESPN.

No thanks.

I wouldn't hate Shannahan. Selfishly I would love it for Jay's sake, but they have to be a bit more long term thinking than that. He's maybe 4th in my list.

I would live with it but would not think highly of the team's chances.

Yeah, I'm with you. Shanahan could maybe be respectable for a couple years. But I wouldn't expect this team to be a championship contender under him. And it would be just buying time til a new regime.

Basically. Plus Shannahan would probably be a GM/coach candidate and I think I'd rather keep those roles separate.

I'm liking Hue Jackson still but I think I'm really convincing myself Philbin would be a great OC for us if fired, but won't come work under another offensive coach, and it's not like our defense couldn't use help with a strong HC hire there.

Good example of how the callers to all shows are a special brand of dumb, some guy called Mully and Hanley about 20 minutes ago talking about how a plan to win with elite offense and a mediocre defense would never work and never has and only the reverse can be achieved (winning with elite defense and mediocre offense), and rather than call him on it, Mully just said the plan wasn't to win with a mediocre defense, but to keep the defense where it was when Lovie departed.
