I was watching Jax vs Tn last night and had the thought Cutler to TN made lots of sense given the whole Vandy thing. And, how long has he known? He's been wearing those Vandy hats for awhile. What will we get in return? And can we still jettison Trestman and co?

[expletive]

Huh? Why wouldn't we?

In my nightmares they force Emery and Trestman to play the season with the salary cap hit in a lame duck situation.

Yes that

Tennessee was rumored to be first in line to try and sign Jay if the Bears let him become a free agent before this season. They've always made the most sense because of Cutler's ties to Nashville and Whisenhunt, who is a good QB guy and plays to veteran strenghts, but hasn't had a lot of success with young QBs.

But if Cutler does go to TN, don't expect that #2 pick to come back. I think best case you get their 2nd. I probably wouldn't accept any less (along with another pick).

I'd take their second too, with at least one other pick. That's basically your Alex Smith return which has been kind of my minimum - but still want a QB I can trust for 2015.

We'll get the mettenberger locker tandem and a 7th

I don't want a QB I can trust. Screw that. No point in trying your best not to be an embarrassment when best case scenario is 8 wins by playing it safe. If you are trading Cutler and taking the cap hit you are throwing away 2015. Any QB you can trust is just going to be a worthless placeholder.

Don't trade Cutler. But if you do, don't compound the problem by hanging onto silly hopes for 2015.

Well then I agree, I won't trade Cutler.

Why would there be a cap hit if you trade Cutler?

Because no one is paying the entire salary in trade?

Current 4/5 of his prorated signing bonus = 4M. However we still have the ability to convert some of his upfront money to a signing bonus and increase the hit to us, which would decrease the receiving teams hit, so we'd probably be forced into doing that. We wouldn't see a cap decrease though, we would see s cap decrease by cutting him outright (net loss of 3M)

NFL trades don't really work that way. I don't think you can trade someone and have the original team pay a portion of the salary.

There would be a cap hit because the Bears are still responsible for the signing bonus.

Even if Titans was stupid enough to swap 1st with Bears, they should have only 1 person in mind for the pick: Leonard Williams. You draft him and just get Kyle Orton-type (as much as it pains me to say that) in FA as a stop gap. 2016 is looking to be a better QB class. Your DTs would be Williams/Paea (re-sign)/Sutton/Ferguson. That's a really good young core at DT.

I still take their 2nd in a heartbeat which is basically a late 1st and then shoot for a future 2nd or 3rd. Maybe a future 3rd that could be 2nd depending on how they do or something.

You guys are nuts if you think Cutler is gonna get you a 2nd round pick. With the salary the other team would be picking up, it's gonna be a late rounder. 4th or 5th rounder maybe?

trading cutler for a 4th round pick would be insane

History of QB trades doesn't put it out of the question, and the Bears have the ability to pick up some extra of cap hit if need be (see my previous post).

But whatever, I'd rather not trade him anyways.

Bears can convert that salary into a signing bonus and they take on that salary. So lets say they took 10 mil of it as signing bonus. Titans would only have to pay 5.5 mil this year and Bears have a 14 mil dead money hit and still get 2.5 mil cap space. For someone who knows a little more on how the NFL cap works, is that right? It's something along that line though.

If you can bring it down low enough, I can easily see a high pick.

Oh I'm not saying it's a good idea at all. But I don't see someone trading away a 2nd round pick AND paying $17mil in base salary or whatever it is next season.

I'm not sure exactly, but it's something like that. Right now they pick up the pro-rated 4/5 of 5M. If they transfer over some more if that salary bonus, I'm not sure if they start the 5 year mark new or also prorate 4/5. The NFL cap does have some level of carry-forward functionality in it so in my mind it's possible they could still back-credit some hit with their unused space from this year, but now it's getting really complex to the point you have to actually open up the CBA agreement and not rely on third party websites.

If the Bears trade Cutler, they only lose his BASE salary off their books (for this year and every year he plays under the contract). They are still on the hook for the bonus money. He has like 18 Mil guaranteed left on his contract, with 12.5 of that being base salary. So, the Bears have to eat that difference. It's just like if they cut him they would have to pay him all of the guaranteed money (18.5), except someone else is agreeing to take on the base salary. The new team would not be accountable for the signing bonus because obioiusly they didn't sign him.

Right now the signing bonus is only 5M though. But they can shift other guaranteed money and classify it as a SB. At any time. It's a slightly unusual and complex structure, by all accounts.

His base salary for 2015 is $15.5 mil which is guaranteed.

http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/chicago-bears

And any new team will pay that 15.5M plus the 10M that gets guaranteed mid-March, but there is flexibility to structure the year by year hit without consent from Jay. Basically throwing a few million in extra commitments from 17-19 where now there is hardly any.

Except we can also take some of that hit over those years before we trade him.

ETA- when we restructure we'd be spreading that hit, but then the trade would accelerate it.

A 4th and Mettenberger I could see happen. Idk if I'd like it, but I could see it

You don't know if you'd like that? That should be really easy to answer.

This

I think a 4th or a 5th is the most you could hope for. I hope the Bears keep Jay but I think its less than 50/50 he is back.

Someone mentioned Mariota before? He projects to be a below average NFL QB. No thanks
