I don't think an 8-team playoff really dilutes the field all that much, especially with the stipulation that it includes the "Big 5" champions.

So for this year, you'd be looking at:

SEC champ (Georgia vs MSU/Bama/Ole Miss/Auburn winner)

ACC champ (FSU)

Pac-12 champ (Oregon)

B1G champ (MSU/OSU)

B12 champ (Baylor/TCU)

and then 3 teams from among ND, the SEC runners up, and the runners up in the B1G and B12.

Though they continue to cherish their independence, I wonder if this would lead ND to consider a conference. As of now, theoretically, there could be 4 teams in the playoff that aren't conference winners (extremely unlikely, I know), but that number goes down to 3 with this potential format and, more importantly, guarantees the conference champ a spot.

I don't think they would join, but you never know. Chance at a guaranteed spot for joining the B1G or ACC might make it more appealing.

I'm sure they would make some sort of ND rule like they did for the BCS, like if ND is in the top 8 of their rankings they have to be picked.

Their continued sway over an entity far bigger than them is unbelievable. I actually don't mind ND, but am perplexed as to why the powers that be continue to let them do whatever the hell they want. It's really something, probably helped out by the fact that the NCAA is such an awful organization with no real power. Good for them, I guess.

That seems highly unlikely to me. They made no such rule regarding ND qualifying for one of the New Year's 6 bowls, so I'm guessing they'd just be thrown in the pool with everyone else battling for one of the other 3 spots.

The NCAA lets everyone do whatever the hell they want, especially with regard to football. The only thing that makes ND different is that they decided to shop their own TV rights rather than hand them to a conference. (Actually, the MWC lets Boise do that too, although that doesn't seem to be doing much for them.)

Must be nice...

Nick Saban may earn in the area of $7 million per year, but that doesn't stop the Alabama faithful from helping out their championship-winning coach whenever and however they can.

According to a report from AL.com, the Crimson Tide Foundation paid off Saban's $3.1 million home in January 2013 even though the organization was under no obligation to do so.

But if that same foundation gave a player a shiny new quarter, the NCAA would lose their minds.

@BruceFeldmanCFB: #FSU's leading rusher Karlos Williams is a suspect in domestic battery case. There's gonna be a helluva 30for30 on this Noles team one day.

Who gets to play alcoholic Bernie Kosar?

That Jimbo Fisher runs a real tight ship.

Meh, she's already recanted and said that she was out of control and he was restraining her - which was apparently confirmed by a few eyewitnesses (who were not football players). From some things I've heard about this, she's not the most stable individual and other incidents have happened before when he's tried to break things off with her.

This happened around the same time Saban's agent was talking to Texas, so mystery solved there.

Two questions. 1) what is crimson tide foundation 2) Saban makes twice that amount in a year. Why does he have a mortgage.

Can't answer the latter, but I'm sure the Crimson Tide Foundation is the fundraising group of high roller alums who supply the funds to pay coaches salaries and for new weight rooms, etc. I know the Razorback Foundation has Don Tyson, JB Hunt, a few Waltons, etc and they had to approve funds any time Arkansas hires a coach.

Tax deduction for the interest. Duh.

Probably similar to the Bull Gators.

That's capped at a million I believe. Even so he's only getting his tax rate back on that deduction, it doesn't make sense to pay a dollar to get 45 cents back. Also he's so far away from any threshold it doesn't make sense in limiting his agi to get to another threshold. So this is not why.

Perhaps for liquidity but seriously somebody who makes nick Saban money should not be financing his home. He probably carried this mortgage knowing that this group of Bama alums were gonna pay it off.

If you have other more profitable things you want to do with your money, there's nothing wrong with financing even if you can afford to pay it off.

Plenty of wealthy people finance their homes.

Plus when he bought the home it was before the housing crash, he didn't make as much as he started making in 2014, and if he was smart and refinanced in the last few years his rate could have been hovering at 3% or less while his extra money earned him 30-40% in a S&P500 Index fund over the same time he would have refinanced.

Six hours until the committee reveals what they think.

Seven hours until the public decides that a 4 team playoff is dumb and a silent committee with no standards isn't a perfect way to decide playoff participants.

For S's & G's, my top 4 right now would be, in order, Mississippi State, Florida State, Alabama and TCU.

I feel like it's a lock that the committee top 4 will waver from the polls' top 4 in this first ranking, just to prove that they're different.
