MLB offseason is easily the worst in sports.

No way. Easily the most fun.

The NFL has the NFL draft, which >>>> anything anyone else has to offer.

NFL and NHL at least everyone signs pretty much immediately.

NBA and MLB are comparably bad, but MLB wins out because at least in the NBA the free-agent classes aren't all complete turds like MLB's has been lately.

[expletive] the NFL draft

Won't even entertain the notion that the NHL is interesting in any way, but why would everyone signing immediately be a good thing? That's not fun. Blowing your load right away is not fun.

The MLB has the fact that it's winter and I get to daydream about summer going for it so that's a win

When it's summer, no matter how excited I get over a Bears or Bulls move, it's always a bummer when I remember it has to be winter for it to come to any sort of fruition.

this sequence leads to results that don't make any sense at all. consider complete re-write

I'm saying as far as offseasons go, thinking about baseball in December is a lot more fun than thinking about the NFL or NBA in June.

D.A.V.I.D. ERROR REPORTING SYSTEM

yeah, this error is still popping up. i'd consider dropping the bit where it pretends it can sense heat and cold. laying it on a little thick

The NFL offseason is the [expletive] worst

Thanks to ESPN, there never really is an NFL offseason. They talk more about the NFL in July than they do MLB

I certainly have no inside information, but my gut is telling me the Giants are going to be tough to beat on this. They have a superb manager, 3 WS in six years, a great ballpark (and pitcher's haven) in one of the best cities in the world if you have money. They have a team full of high-character guys and Lester's BF in baseball, arguably. On a purely personal level, I would think SF would be tough to beat.

The caveat there is the 7th year. If someone is willing to go there, especially if it's not a vested year, I think they win. And I just can't see the Giants (or Cubs, for that matter) doing that.

“The Cubs from (owner Tom Ricketts) all the way down to the clubhouse guys have bent over backwards to make Jon feel like Chicago is the place to be,” said Ryan Dempster, Lester’s former teammate and who is now a front-office assistant for the Cubs. “If he doesn’t take their offer ,it won ‘t be like they had failed. A few teams will be disappointed at the end. He must decide what is right for him and his family in the future.”

The #SFGiants met late Monday night with Jon Lester"s representatives, hoping to strike a deal in the next couple of days.

I agree. He's going to SF.

The Red Sox flew to see Lester last week and everyone dismisses it but the Giants meet with Lester's agent while they are both at the Winter Meetings and he's definitely going to SF? The Cubs and Dodgers could have met with him too yesterday, but went unreported.

PTR flew to Atlanta to meet with Lester, but he could only afford a connecting flight and got there too late.

The meetings have squat to do with it. I just think SF has the most to offer, period. If the contracts are comparable, I think he goes to the Giants.

If the Dodgers (who I'm still not absolutely convinced are all-in here) or Red Sox give him a 7th guaranteed year and the Giants (iffy) or Cubs (no chance) don't, I think he ends up going to whichever team does. And if it came down to the Dodgers and Red Sox with 7 years, I think he goes back to Boston even if it's a little less money.

I said from the beginning with Martin that the key was the 5th year - if someone offered it, the Cubs were out. Same is true with the 7th year and Lester, I'm guessing. The difference is, even if no one offers a 7th year it's probably only about 30% at best Lester picks the Cubs, and Martin probably would have chosen them if the Jays hadn't kicked in the 5th year.

I don't know if he goes to SF if contacts are comparable. Yes they've won 3 WS in 5 years, but they already lost Sandoval and are probably losing Vogelsong and Peavy and possibly Romo. Doesn't mean they can't win it next year, or cant pick up most/all of that value in FA/prospects but I don't think they are overwhelmingly a better bet to win championships over the next 6-7 years than the Dodgers, Red Sox or Cubs.
