I don't personally see what's wrong with the article. If we don't add much else, our payroll stays in the same range it's been at. Helped by having lots of controllable, cheap guys and Soriano's money coming off the books. It's a longer term deal than what we've been doing, but the final year end payroll is going to look the same.

And if Gordon is right, it's not a Bank of Cutler type deal, it only pertains to the 10 mill left for his signing bonus. Which can be handy, but not nearly to the extent I was hoping for.

It's interesting that all of the local guys seem pretty certain that the Cubs are basically done at this point outside of adding Gomes and Ross. The national guys, on the other hand, have been fairly consistent with the reports that the Cubs are still looking for a big outfield bat. Hopefully the national guys are right.

I don't think the local guys are as connected as they were under the previous regime, and I don't think that they know much more than the national media. It may just be me, but the only Chicago media guy who seems to know anything is that asshat Kaplan.

Wittenmeyer's sources are fine (or at least no worse than everybody else's). He's just ruined his credibility by being a jerk in a way that people don't like.

It's obvious that the Sun Times has an agenda

It's obvious a lot of reporters in town have an agenda. Wittenmeyer's agenda is just more obvious to many because it goes against the zeitgeist.

I understood this logic when the Trib owned the team, but now?

I couldn't even guess at why.

It's not just Wittenmyer. It's that whole paper.

Since Lester is in Chicago, do we have any idea when the press conference will be? I'm assuming he'll spend the weekend in the city and maybe a PC on Monday?

Read somewhere that Levine said Monday.

Wittenmeyer just posted an article saying that the Lester signing doesn't mean the Cubs are on a "spending spree" and they're likely done with any impact moves for the rest of the offseason. And with that, I fully expect the Cubs to acquire Justin Upton tomorrow.

I don't think Wittenmeyer has any reliable sources and just throws [expletive] at the wall at this point.

He had the Giants as favorites about 30 minutes before they dropped out.

My guess is he's right for the wrong reasons. They have the trade deadline and Price next offseason.

I look forward to one day reading "Despite titles, Cubs formula still all wrong" with his byline.

Don't a lot of the media guys have an agenda agains Theo's regime because the FO has essentially iced them out out of a lot of info/people they use to have access to?

They still haven't made the signing official which I find odd. Do they still have to work on the contract details maybe? I assume a PC will be Monday or Tuesday though.

Maybe on the South Side. In the Cubs’ case, the monsters are still hiding under the bed, waiting for somebody to turn the channel on their local TV deal in a few years.

That is the quote I don't get in the article.

So, the Sox are committed to bigtime spending by signing a closer and trading for a guy that they have a good chance of NOT spending money on (50/50 shot they lose Shark)... but the Cubs spend 155m on a bonafide ace and are hiding under the bed?

They also signed LaRoche (2/$25) and Zach Duke (3/$15)

That's the sense I get. They all seem bitter except Mooney.

Didn't Theo essentially tell Wittenmeyer he didn't know what the [expletive] he was talking about on some issue while on Kap's show once? Gordo seems to have a particular ax to grind, though as David has said, that has been the M.O. at the Sun Times for so long that they probably don't know how to turn it off.
