Is this the first time a thread has gone over 60 pages and the Cubs actually GOT the player they targeted?

 

Recent high profile targets:

 

FA:

Furcal: No

Bradley: Yes

Pujols: No

Fielder: No

Sanchez: No (though talk didn't really heat up until the report that we'd signed him)

 

Trade:

Roberts: No

Harden: Yes

Peavy: No

Granderson: No

Garza: Yes

 

And of course, Epstein: Yes

The one that came to mind for me was Juan Pierre, though that was a little older.

Fukudome was discussed for quite awhile before we signed him too.

Had quite a lot of discussion about Beltran after the 04 season, pretty much demanding that Hendry went after him and being pissed that it looked like he made him a token offer to appease the fan base.

 

It's a damn shame that part of the NSBB database was lost forever. I want to go back and read the 2003 playoff game threads.

Is the Projected WAR in this article the same thing that Kyle has been talking about with the Rockies randomly looking like a contender.

 

Near the bottom he uses the more reliable Base Runs which pushes the Rockies down to middle of the pack. The Cubs remain 5th in the NL by that measure.

Looking at baserun projections for the AL makes the White Sox off-season thus far all the more baffling.

If we are going by the Fangraphs depth charts projections, after the Lester signing, the Cubs are projected as the 2nd WC in the NL.

 

Playoff teams:

 

AL

Mariners (ALW Champs)

Tigers (ALC Champs)

Red Sox (ALE Champs)

Blue Jays (AL WC1)

Angels (AL WC2)

 

NL

Dodgers (NLW Champs)

Cardinals (NLC Champs)

Nationals (NLE Champs)

Pirates (NL WC1)

Cubs (NL WC2)

If Cubs are chasing another starter, I think they're the type of franchise positioned to take a flier Brett Anderson gamble. They don't have to depend on him. They have salary to burn for the next couple of years if they have to eat the contract, and a ton of candidates to eat innings in the back of the rotation. The potential payoff is a TOR pitcher.

 

I think McCarthy is going to get paid a lot of money as the Lester/Scherzer consolation prize by the Giants, Tigers or Red Sox.

FWIW. Vegas has updated their over under win totals for 2015. The Cubs are now at 89.5 up from 82.5 before Lester.
