I don't get how some still bitch about the playoff format.

Well, I know why meatballs are who don't get the crapshootiness (thinking that 2-3 games is somehow vastly better than one in terms of variance), but other than that...

A - one game playoffs are amazing...whether there are 2 every year or not, they are really fun.

B - why should wild card teams get a normal playoff bid like division winners? like, what's the uproar about? teams can avoid being thrown into this round by winning their division.

To me this is kind of an awesome system both logically and in terms of excitement.

Yeah, I previously posted I wished it were best of three. But I'd like to redact that.

They're pretty awesome as they are. But, of course I couldn't watch Tuesday night's game and watched all of the meh of last night.

My ideal would be a 7:30 est and 9:00 est start running on the same night, one game will be ending while the other will be in the middle innings. MLB would own the night and a meh game would be washed out by the exciting one, while two exciting ones would be epic.

I don't mind that idea.

Anything that puts even one day's more space between the end of the regular season and the start of the divisional round is a non-starter. It's too long as it is. Screw travel days, start it on Tusday and Wednesday.

You could plan out the season so it ends on the appropriate day to accommodate whatever playoff format you want.

The chances of the favored team winning a 3 game series can be up to 12.5% more than a 1 game series.

Why is the goal to make it easier for the favorite?

The goal isn't to make it easier for the favorite. It's to determine the best team. A multiple game series, while still imperfect, will better help determine which of 2 teams is better.

Ask yourself this: What's a better format for truly determining the best team in the league/country? The NCAA tournament or the NBA playoffs?

Because the World Series doesn't always feature the best team in the NL vs. the best team in the AL. A multiple game series, while still imperfect, will better help determine which of 2 teams is better.

I'm not going to ask myself that because I'm not one of the weirdos all obsessed with making sure the "best" teams reach the finals. The regular season tells us who is best, the playoffs tell us who wins the world series.

The division winners are already rewarded in this system, the #1 seed a little more, and the WC teams have a tougher path. That's great. A 3-game series is an awful idea that only pretends to be a better format for determining the best team.

Posted

If "the goal" were to decide the best team, just have a 30-team round robin, 6 games against each other team, 3 home and 3 away.

There is no "the" goal. There are lots of different goals. Adding excitement to the regular season. Producing a premium product to create more revenue. Being fair to try to create a champion. All of those goals must be weighed against each other when creating a format, not obsessing on one and becoming some kind of min-maxing weirdo about it.

wonderfully misleading way to characterize the difference

Sorry if I wasn't being clear. Currently the regular season ends on a Sunday. If my idea were to be implemented, the regular season would have to end on Wednesday or Thursday. You just have to schedule the season so that happens.

It doesn't matter when the regular season ends if you are unnecessarily adding 3-5 game wild card series. That will always push back the start of the division series.

Let's pretend for a second that it matters that marginal amount x is 12% higher than marginal amount y.

The fun of a one game playoff outweighs the hell out of that.

Pretty sure TBS just showed a graphic that said Weaver has a "4.37 ERA in shutout innings".

did they at least show viewers where the pitcher plays on the baseball field?

if we make the playoffs next year and our games are on TBS, I might have to get one of those devices to sync the radio up with the tv (since there's a delay on satellite)

this is truly horrendous

Did someone just say that Gordon wouldn't have scored from 2nd if Hamilton hadn't caught that ball, or am I having a stroke? Kinda hope I'm having a stroke.
