Brett is saying I'm wrong. He says they have to pass thru first because its August. If so, that sucks.

Is this your first August?

Honestly didn't remember/know that.

dafuq

Sorry, didn't equate that it'd be different than pre-August. Brain fart.

As it is, I think that a claim costs money to make. I wonder if its possible he's already cleared without having a claim put on him?

So basically, the only leverage the Marlins have would be the hope that nobody wants to take on Turner's salary, which is really a non issue for a player like Turner.

It's a baffling move, really. They must really hate his ERA.

Well and outright waivers are different than trade waivers. If they're trying to outright him off the 40 man those are irrevocable right?

Right.

Yeah, I am losing my mind with all of this. So their only options are trade him or lose him for nothing? So Vogelbach shouldn't be in play at all, if we win the claim...

Here are their options:

1) MLB team claims him on waivers - Either the Marlins let them have him, work out a trade with that team for him, or pull him back and he can't be waived again.

2) He clears waivers - Marlins can work out a trade with any team for him, send him to the minors, or release him.

Ok. That's what I thought. But, from the part that I bolded, that means that he would have to stay on the 25-man roster, since he has no options left. Which, it seems like they don't want him on the 25-man.

Right, but it's August. Teams will occasionally put the whole team on waivers just to see if nobody notices and they slip through. Most get pulled back right away with little to no fanfare, and players nobody care about will get traded afterwards. Someone put out the Jacob Turner signal, though, and I can't imagine him slipping through.

Yeah, but he wasn't placed on waivers... he was DFA'd.... meaning they have to either trade him or lose him for nothing, assuming he doesn't make it through waivers, which he won't. Basically, they picked a terrible time to do this.

In reverse order of the standings starting with the team's own league (NL in this case) and then the other league, right? And multiple teams can put in a claim but the highest priority either gets a deal done or nothing happens.

Correct. So it goes Rockies, Cubs, irrelevant.

Given that, I don't see him making it past the Rockies.

They still have the option to add him back to the roster which, as incredibly unlikely as it may be, is still possible if someone realizes how stupid of a decision the DFA was.

It's too bad we're 3.5 up on Colorado. Otherwise we could just get swept and move into the top spot

Stupid Rizzo... hitting all those home runs all year to prevent us from being even worse.

Just beat them 3 out of 4.

Wait, how can a player be pulled back after being DFA'd? I thought the whole point was that you got a free 25 and 40 man roster spot for 10 days while you figured out what to do with a player. The downside is that by the end of the 10 days, you have to either trade him, or release him (through a waiver claim or outright) or send him to the minors. If you could pull a player back, why wouldn't teams be abusing this left and right to get free roster spots for 10 days?

The way I'm understanding the rules, the Marlins have basically no leverage because it's August. They can send Turner through revocable waivers (normal August waivers to try to make a trade) immediately (this is assuming this has already not been done in August). If someone claims him, they can pull him back if the other team isn't offering anything. But there would be no point to that, because at the end of the 10 days they would have to send him through waivers as part of the DFA process, and the same team could just claim him again and take him.

If they had done this in July or if he has already somehow cleared revocable waivers, then they could trade him to any team. But that doesn't appear to be the case here.

Good news! Rockies beat writer says...

Nick Groke @nickgroke

Among the teams that may be interested in a waiver claim on RHP Jacob Turner, the #Rockies are not one of them, I'm told...

Get on it

I think it's a no-brainer, but what do we do to accommodate it?

Turner has no options left, so he comes up immediately. No problem. But do you hide him in the pen and possibly [expletive] with him even more or do you put him in the rotation?

Seems like taking Edwin's spot in the rotation is the easiest option, but you've got Straily waiting to be put in and you've got Doubront now too. Who just got pissy when he was put in the pen.

So, what do you do?

Chuck him in the pen, let Bosio work with him a ton and figure out the mess in Spring Training. Not worried about the pen messing him up more.

Go ahead and DFA Rusin while you are at it to clear the spot.

I would love to throw him right in the rotation, and would love for him to take Jackson's spot, but I just don't see it happening. Stick him in the pen, if need be. Just get him on the roster and we can sort it out later.

I'm so happy the Rockies are taking a pass; I can't believe this guy is being handed over for peanuts at the age of 23.

schlitter, rusin, villanueva, valaika, lake, schierholtz... there is more than enough dead wood to cut loose if they want to sign him. personally i'd just stick him in the pen for someone like schlitter or whatever, let him work with bosio while rarely pitching games. rosters expand in a few weeks anyway.

If we did get him, could we possibly move to a six-man rotation when rosters expand...? It's not like we have any guys that absolutely need to be out there every five days. Wada and Arrieta have injury histories. Hendricks hasn't thrown over 166 innings in a year and could easily approach 200 total this year. Let's us get a better look at some of the new acquisitions.

That would surprise me but if true that should clear the way for the FO to add him.

Nate Turner is 11 days younger than Pierce Johnson

So is Jacob Turner.

For someone who spends as much time talking (er, writing?) about baseball as he does, Kyle does [expletive] like that a lot.
