Yeah I'm wondering why the Rays didn't just hold on and try to get more in the winter. If not, just try to win it all next year or trade at the deadline.

I think Friedman may be playing for this year.

Then keep him.

Yeah I don't see how Smyly and Franklin improve the Rays over just keeping Price. And can't believe a similar package wouldn't have been available in the offseason.

Javy time?

Maybe, but I personally don't see Baez coming up, if at all, until after the Iowa season is done.

If they're gonna burn his year anyway, might as well get him here ASAP and get him as many PA as possible.

From a service-time perspective, that'd be the worst time to do it.

Why? I thought service time was service time. The more time he has up in the majors this year, the less he would be able to have next season (assuming the Cubs were even playing the clock).

Nice pick-up for the Cubs in Victor Caratini for two rather expendable pieces. I like it. 20-year-old switch-hitting catcher with good approach and decent hit tool along with some pop. Young for his league. Good future piece to try to develop for two guys that didn't figure into the plans in any meaningful way going forward.

If service time is their main concern with Baez and plan on starting him in Iowa next year, then he shouldn't be up at all. Otherwise, the sooner he's brought up, the more time you get with him during this season.

Dave Cameron defending Tampa was mildly amusing. I like Adames quite a bit, but Smyly and Franklin is the rest? It's awful. Who is even the lead piece here. I refuse to this as a win for Tampa, when Russell was on the table for them. If you trade Price, it damn sure better be for impact.

My twitter handle only exists due to Jim Bowden's negligence that has followed him throughout everything he's done in baseball. #goodnight

An angry Reds' fan perhaps? Haha.

Mind you, it was only 1 game, but I was not impressed with Adames. Maybe the potential is there, but from what I saw, his hitting approach needs quite a bit of refinement, which isn't that unexpected for an 18 year old.

Right, but Kyle said "from a service-time perspective". I'm certainly not expecting you to try to explain Kyle's words...

I'm pretty sure that he's saying that if you're going to burn the extra year anyway, the sooner you do it, the better.

It all depends on what happens the next couple years as players develop, but as of now is it fair to see we got a better return for Shark then the Sox and Rays got for Lester and Price?

I like Russell alone better than the combination of what they got for Lester and Price.

I get the whole idea of if you are going to bring him up now and to stay for good, then you should do it right away, but, again, Kyle was speaking specifically from a service time perspective.

And how do you "burn" a year? I thought you could bring someone up in September for a few weeks and then just keep him down the following season a little longer to where those few weeks won't give him a full year of service time. There's no burning in baseball. No Burning!

Playing him in September and holding him down for 7 weeks next year would work, but that seems pretty awful compared with either bringing him up now or holding him down until early next April.

Yep.

Harold Reynolds in full meatball mode tonight. Does he even ever actually watch any games? He said if the Rays had traded Price for Craig and Kelly everyone would be saying what a great trade it was because those guys are BASEBALL PLAYERS! And the Red Sox got both of them for Lackey - amazing!

He is really making my head hurt.

He's a [expletive] idiot, I was watching towards the end of the trade deadline. He was applauding the Red Sox for getting actual MLB players in the Lester/Lackey trades and not going after prospects and "numbers on a list." Then they immediately went into the Price trade when not all the pieces were known and they were saying Walker and/or Hultzen might be in the deal, he goes on slobbering about how getting those guys was so great, the Rays got the better deal because of getting them and "they are gonna be special" and he's heard great things.
