completely random resurgence

Not that random to me - it was a good pickup from Hendry. Edmonds was still a good hitter, and he was motivated to prove an entire fanbase (whose opinions he cared about from being on the other side of a rivalry) wrong about him.

Glenn Beckert. Then, later, Larry Biittner.

I always loved Larry Biiiiiiitner for no other reason than the extraneous "i". As a kid I always made sure to pronounce the extra "i" and then a few more for good measure. "Bi-i-i-i-i-ttner."

My friends and I did the same with David Aardsma.

Don't ask me why, but...Dwight Smith.

I suppose because he was a solid little player who was never talked much about.

I loved Dwight Smith. I thought for sure he would have a long solid career as a productive player.

The 1989 ROY and runner-up? Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith, IIRC. Has there ever been another case where that has happened with teammates? I thought 1989 was just the beginning of a long run for the Cubs.

On a side note, I have started to think even before today that of all the potential stars coming up, Mendy Alcantara may be my favorite for reasons rational and irrational.

I was already a avid Bill James reader in 89, so I never bought into the Walton thing that much. But with vets like Dawson and Sandberg. Younger players like Smith, Walton, Grace and Maddux. It was hard not to be very excited about the Cubs, even after they got whoooped by Will Clark in the playoffs

It's got to be Hundley. Neifi sucked, but he at least hit a GW grand slam against St. Louis once. Edwin Jackson might climb the list if he doesn't get his [expletive] together.

I don't hate Barney, but those other 2 are probably high up for me. I really hate players that stay around for a long time and there's no reason they should. Theriot, Hill, Neifi, Macias

Yep. And it's not even close.

i've got a thing for heels, and todd hundley was a great [expletive] heel

i'm finding it hard to think of anyone other than theriot. his abysmal play and the cub fan meatballery was bad enough. but when he went over to the cardinals and complained about jim hendry ruining the clubhouse by getting rid of all the white guys, that was the icing on the cake

ryne sandberg also comes to mind. since i never really latched onto him when i was younger, most of my thoughts about him have to do with him quitting on the team, that awful HOF speech, and the stupid things he says and does nowadays. that being said, his biggest crime is being a passive-aggressive idiot, something i probably shouldn't hold against one of the best players in the history of my favorite team in the world
