Manny Ramirez is in tonight's I-#Cubs lineup batting sixth and DHing. #PCL

As adamant as Theo was about his role when they signed him, it doesn't seem that they left themselves much room to call up Manny. What circumstances do people see needing to occur to make it happen?

I don't think there's anything that can change their minds. Maybe if Ricketts forced it to sell tickets, but that's not something he's going to do. Baez and Bryant aren't going to be up this year and since he was brought in to influence them, he will stay with them.

I don't see any. He's a player/coach and I think the Cubs value the "coach" part more than the player part. I think if Baez or Soler were to come up to the majors this year, Manny might be able to come along as like an escort, but I don't see it this year.

What if has a 1500 OPS the next 2 months?

And a couple current OF get hurt?

The circumstance would be Theo stops being such a smug prick and does something awesome for once in his whole stupid Cubs life.

If the NL adopts the DH.

Maybe when Bryant, AA, and Baez get called up at some point. Hell, I wouldn't mind manny as a bench coach

If Manny is a benefit to Bryant/Baez at all, I'd prefer he stay where he is. And at his age, I don't think bringing him up would do anything for the team but sell a few more tickets.

Having said that, once Iowa's season is over and the rosters are expanded, I don't see the harm in bringing him up, if he's amenable to it. It's not as if he'd be taking ABs away from anyone who needs them.

He's been playing about 1 in every 3-4 days since playing in games (Mesa before Iowa included). I don't think he'll get enough ABs to warrant a callup even if he dominates those ABs.

He's also not on the 40-man. So, even if a couple OF get hurt, you still have Alcantara, Vitters, Jackson, Szczur, and Watkins all who have played the OF, ahead of him. Still have Bonafacio coming back at some point. One of those guys can easily be removed to make room for Manny, but I think all but Jackson would get a shot before Manny unless we're talking September.

Manny sells no Cubs tix. Bill Veeck used to bring Minnie Minoso back once a decade. It was a cute idea, nothing else. Manny sells zero Cubs tix at Wrigley. We have our own alleged steroid user who the team wants nothing to do with. Have a Sammy Sosa Day at the end of the year and we have a sellout.

what is the end game for manny anyway? is he just trying to get a few more ABs in the majors or be a ML coach?

The latter, I think. Presumably letting him play a little was just a perk and since there's not a good outfielder to be found in AAA it doesn't hurt anything.

He probably retired, got sick of being around his wife and kids after 10 minutes and wanted to get into something that got him away

If he does play he sets back his HOF eligibility, no? I could see him harboring thoughts of this being an audition for a contract in the offseason, but I think he just wants to be involved in baseball.

Pretty sure if he really wanted to play in the majors again he wouldn't have signed with a team that flat out said he "is not and will not be a fit on the major league roster"

Interesting. I was looking at the Cubs minor league rosters just last night and said, "Zak Blair's gonna be cut soon." Didn't think of Zapata but it makes sense.
