my friend swears his nickname is mendy which i've never heard and it annoys me greatly.

I thought it was Smendy, which really isn't much better.

Is it al-CAN-tuh-ruh, al-can-TAR-ruh, or al-can-TARE-ruh?

the correct pronunciation is closest to the first one, except it's more of a "con" sound.

i know len said that he says it "al-contra" (which is still closer than the way english speakers usually say that name, which is al-can-TARE-ruh) but i think that's just the way he heard it. the "tar" still is a syllable of its own.

Dillon Maples: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Jordan Brink followed him and made his pro debut: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Hopefully a couple more starts for Maples and then he can head up to Kane County. Time it with a Paniagua promotion?

Galindo is doing fine in the VSL also. I think he is only 17.

Last year's 7 high-profile IFA signees are all off to good starts though mystery surrounds one of them.

RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (19) MWL - 3-0, 3.22 ERA, 50.1 IP, 51 H, 7 BB/51 K.

SS Gleyber Torres (17) AZL - .308/.409/.444, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 BB/8 K in 39 AB.

RF Eloy Jimenez (17) AZL - .444/.444/.889, 1 2B, 1 HR, 0 BB/2 K in 9 AB.

RHP Jeferson Mejia (19) AZL - 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 9.1 IP, 7 H, 2 BB/12 K.

C Yohan Matos (17) DSL - .316/.435/.491, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 12 BB/13 K in 57 AB.

3B Wladimir Galindo (17) VSL - .298/.377/.532, 16 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 13 BB/35 K in 141 AB.

RHP Erling Moreno (17) VSL/DSL - 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 IP, 4 H, 0 BB/3 K.

Moreno made one appearance on May 15th in the VSL but hasn't pitched since. He is currently listed on the DSL roster but has yet to see game action for them.

We need to be a little more skeptical about these ages people.

FWIW

Len Kasper ‏@LenKasper 17m

@dylanplatz @Crewsett I would say a subtle tweak after hearing him say it. It gets tricky with the Spanish/English thing

Stan Croussett ‏@Crewsett 16m

@LenKasper @dylanplatz It's incredibly tricky. It's why I found it reasonable that he'd accept Alcontra. Thanks for digging into it.

Len Kasper ‏@LenKasper 10m

@Crewsett @dylanplatz Honestly, I was saying it the lazy way without the subtle "tuh" in the middle. Pride myself on getting it right.

Stan Croussett ‏@Crewsett 9m

@LenKasper @dylanplatz As a Hispanic, I commend you. Helped avoid a lot of confusion that I was worried about.

Len Kasper ‏@LenKasper 7m

@Crewsett @dylanplatz Yes, you were right. Was going by what I was told--Al-KAHN-truh is just the easy way, but technically not correct.

I was wondering if Alcantara just didn't care how they pronounced his last name because what Len is saying now seems more in line with how I imagined Alcantara's name to be pronounced, with 4 syllables*.

* I know Spanish but I'm certainly no native speaker so this is no expert opinion.

So is it technically pronounced Al-con-ter-uh, where the "ter" is short sounding?

It's not really a "ter" sound, probably more of a light "tuh" with the accent on the CON. Instead of al contra it's more like al CON tura
