Week 15: Bears (7-6) @ Browns (4-9) Noon, FOX

What would the moral reason to throw or not to throw to a guy? I mean I could see it if your wife was Cindy Sandberg or if the guy blasphemed Kent Murcker or if he was a Kim Jong Un fan, but what else?

Josh McCown is a good guy so he only throws to good guys like Alshon. Jay Cutler's a bad guy so he throws to fellow bad guy BMarsh.

Also don't look at Banedon's post.

Not moral decisions. Not wanting to check down? Just bad football decisions? Thinking you can force the big play because you have a canon?

what about being able to make a throw because you have a cannon? moral or immoral, you choose.

Marshall said Jay is the smartest guy in the room, but I think knowing when you can and can't throw a bullet into a tight spot is Jay's biggest weakness. Maybe he knows defenses, but I wonder if he knows himself. If Jay fixes that he can be a top 5ish QB.

Really looking forward to seeing Cutler out there, couldn't wish for a better opponent to go against, shame it's on the road though.

Really? The Browns have a legit defense. I would much rather he had come back for the Vikings or Cowboys.

The Browns defense is 23rd in the league in DVOA. 22nd against the pass and 18th against the run.

I start to wonder about DVOA when I see it has the Bears defense 19th and not dead last again the run

If Cutler got squirrelly with the football due to rust (and his style of play in general) you'd think the Browns aren't the kind of team that would make us pay but who knows with this defense.

I want Jay to lead the team to the playoffs. Obviously best case scenario. But what if Jay looks a little hurt or really rusty and you are down 17-3 at halftime? Should Trestman put McCown in?

DVOA has the Bears 31st against the run...are you saying you're taking issue with them not being 32nd?

I would prefer our head coach not be a knee-jerk meatball idiot, myself. But that's just me using my big, sexy chess club brain.

If it's game 2 of the season I understand. But this is a must win game and you have to react quickly. On the other hand maybe the organization thinks evaluating Jay is more important that an improbable playoff run. If you pull a rusty Cutler and McCown leads the Bears to a win, I can't see Trestman going back to Cutler.

That was a bad opening line on Vegas's part

Not sure about that, the Bears have been pretty poor on the road losing to the Rams, Vikings, and Redskins and the Browns just came off a close loss to the Patriots.

Holy [expletive], it's Josh [expletive] McCown and all I hear all day people are worried the bears won't go to him the moment Cutler doesn't look good. IT'S JOSH [expletive] MCCOWN.

Who has outplayed Cutler this year by a wide margin

Except Cutler probably would've won that Vikings game

Jason Marquis probably performed better than Greg Maddux over a month long stretch during their respective careers too.

Not really, plus he's faced shittier defenses and he's an older backup QB. I don't get this "hot hand" crap at all; the guy hasn't been able to stick as a starter for a reason, and the odds of him keeping up this success can't be too good, especially if they make the playoffs. His "hot hand" could easily implode in less than a single game. I would think what the offense can do and has done would make wanting the better QB coming back all the more appealing instead of thinking, "nah, let's not rock the boat with this whole QB who was out of football a little while ago thing."

Who cares that he's an older backup right now. What has he done lately in this system with this coach and with these players. He has a better rating by 20 points on Culter. Interception % 6 times less. Throws for more yards per game and yards per attempt. And has a better win/loss record. So, yes McCown has destroyed Cutler stat wise. Sure Josh's hot hand could cool off and Cutler could lay an egg. But I think we have a much better idea of what McCown will do (and it's pretty darn good), but we don't really know how Jay will do coming off the injury. I said earlier if you can keep the playbook in tact and Jay can make all the throws he made earlier in the year, play Jay Sunday which the Bears will do. But you really can't say that Cutler hasn't been outplayed because he absolutely has. You would have to say that in spite of the stats start Jay.

Well, one would assume you'd want the better player to play, but silly me...

What has he done lately in this system with this coach and with these players.

So what? It's a miracle he's done what he's done and he should be applauded for it, but to act like he's a long term solution, even just for the rest of this season, when your started is healthy is absurd. This isn't some kind of Bledsoe/Brady situation, plus it's not like Cutler wasn't also clicking under the new coaching and with the new offense.

He has a better rating by 20 points on Culter.

QB rating? Really?

Interception % 6 times less.

Yeah, he's been lucky, especially since he's had some called back due to penalties. You really think that'll last, especially when he's facing better defenses?

Throws for more yards per game and yards per attempt.

And Cutler has been annihilating Bears passing records his whole time here, so don't try to make it sound like they suddenly upgraded their passing game from something shitty.

And has a better win/loss record.

...

What?

He's 2-3.

So, yes McCown has destroyed Cutler stat wise.

Well, no; in the stats that matter they're actually pretty close, plus, again, McCown has mostly faced worse defenses.

No, I would say "start the better starting QB instead of the older backup QB who has had a nice hot streak against some awful defenses and struggled brutally hard in the red zone until the last game."
