Week 15: Bears (7-6) @ Browns (4-9) Noon, FOX

Plus McCown has basically been made by Alshon, and I would much rather see Alshon in beast mode with Cutler's sexy arm of power throwing to him.

Basically we should be excited that we're going to see what they've been doing upgraded.

remember when Caleb Hanie was the "hot hand?"

The people that don't want to start Cutler should consider this: McCown lost to the Vikings. Want to blame the defense for that? Go ahead but whoever the QB is, that guy will have to be able to bail out the horrible Bears defense. Cutler has shown he has a better chance of doing that.

No?

Yeah, Hanie was never the hot hand; he was only ever a monstrosity of necessity.

I love having a backup like McCown, but I don't want to see him in there unless Cutler is hurt. Cutler has shown repeatedly he can lead this team to comeback wins, so even being behind isn't a reason to pull him.

People loved him after Cutler was a huge [expletive] by not playing when he couldn't move in the NFC Championship game. Then they had to actually watch Hanie in the regular season the next year.

But he was never actually hot by any remote stretch of the word and couldn't even dream of doing what McCown has done. It's not comparable at all.

I love this assumption that Cutler wouldn't have eaten these horrible defenses for breakfast had he been healthy

His DVOA is 6.5% while McCown's is 30.6%, tied with Aaron Rodgers for 5th among QBs this season.

you say this like I know what the [expletive] DVOA is

That doesn't really counter what Derwood is saying, plus DVOA doesn't really work like you seem to want it to.

sure it does. MCCOWN HAS THROWN FOR LIKE 350 YARDS IN 3 STRAIGHT GAMES THAT'S INCREDIBLE. Cutler had the games leading up to those to be better and he didn't do it.

I love Jay Cutler and he's our QB and he should be starting, but this almost meatballian anti-meatball idea that Cutler is capable of playing at a consistently higher level than what McCown has been playing at recently is ridiculous.

and DVOA works exactly how I want it to, it measures a QB's value over an average replacement, adjusted for defense. McCown's has been better. Do I necessarily think that it has a better chance to be better in the next game, no, I don't.

MY GOD, ONE WOULD EXPECT THE TEAM TO HAVE GONE BETTER THAN 2-2 IN THE LAST 4 GAMES AND MANAGED TO SCORE MORE THAN 21 POINTS IN ONLY 1 OF THEM, IT'S AS IF THEY ARE AN UNBEATABLE STEAMROLLER OF VICTORY.

also, his QBR is higher than Peyton [expletive] Manning's. yeah, I'd put a fair amount of money on Cutler not being better than that given the same situations and opponents. For one, it would be nearly impossible.

that's barely an argument

McCown has done an admirable job and nothing should be taken away from what he's done but the fact is, Cutler is the better quarterback. With Cutler, we probably don't lose the Rams and Vikings games because McCown wasn't able to convert in the red zone. He might have had good games on paper, but he didn't play particularly well in those games.

If Cutler throws for 225, 2TDs and 1 INT in every game from here on out, and they win all three and miss out on the postseason, will it be because they didn't go with the guy who had thrown for 350 against the worst defense in the league?

One guy gives them a better chance to win bigger. One guy is more talented.

And it isn't like Cutler was putting up Jonathan Quinn numbers when he was playing. He had one blowup game with stupid throws. Half the city was ready to fellate him after the comeback wins. And now he sucks because people think Josh McCown is Roy Hobbs.

McCown is a perfectly cromulent backup. Lets be thankful he was good when he was in.

Posted
But hey, maybe they'll start giving out extra points if he keeps throwing for monster yards.

again, barely an argument. McCown throwing for monster yards has been the only thing keeping these guys in the games, and Trestman's game management and last second play-calling hasn't been helping anything.

McCown not as good in the red zone? He's THROWN FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF TOUCHDOWNS IN 3 LESS STARTS. Let's not go off the rails here. I don't know why the Bears lost to the Rams but it wasn't McCown's fault.

and I already said that Cutler should start. But what McCown did in his stead was certainly more than "cromulent"

"I'm not confident in a McCown-lead offense scoring enough to win" is a pretty clearcut argument.

just not a very strong one.
