Week 15: Bears (7-6) @ Browns (4-9) Noon, FOX

A Bears loss Sunday at the hands of Cutler would result in the most epic meatball explosion this city has ever seen.

They could lose the game 49-52 and it would still be blamed on him, yet McCown's losses are not on him at all.

This is an older backup QB playing out of his mind for a couple games, and, of course, the Bears are basing a gigantic decision on that tiny window.

IMO, the Bears think rightly or wrongly that they have a system to maximize the performance of the position and don't want to tie up huge dollars that can be used elsewhere.

I almost feel sorry for Cutler, he's always found himself in a terrible place. If he was drafted by a team like Minnesota or Clevland at the start of his career he'd probably be a mainstay and face of the franchise. But then again he's a multimillionaire with a hot wife, I guess I don't feel sorry for him.

Jay Cutler would much rather be in Denver or Chicago than Cleveland or Minnesota don't you think? Jay's personality and trying to write checks his arms and his receiver's openness can't cash is what makes this decision a little harder than it should. If he wants to be here and win, take $15 million a year and any feelings of sorriness will disappear.

I want Cutler back, but do you want to be the Ravens, Cowboys, Giants and soon the Saints who are cap screwed and have good but not great teams due to overpaying? I understand doing that to pay a transcendent player, but I don't know if Cutler is. His injury is making things too difficult.

Gotta franchise him. All in with Peanut on a one year deal and keep Peppers for one more go around. See what Cutler is for a full year.

Those teams aren't screwed because of what they are paying their QBs. The Cowboys are poorly run and coached. The Giants are aging and injured on the OL. Oh and Eli has been terrible. The Ravens lost a bunch of players they didn't really need to be paying anyway (Ellerbe and Kruger were overpaid, Reed old). They'll be fine.

Bears will be fine too if they can continue to find cheap talent (Slauson, Anderson, Jennings a few years ago) and most of all start hitting in the draft more often.

I think the Bears will end up keeping him in the $16-18/yr range.

#Bears coach Marc Trestman announces QB Jay Cutler as Sunday's starter.

I'd imagine they'd go with a similar offense as McCown has had success with. Less downfield throws than Cutler's used to, but more safe throws with max protection and a Forte checkdown.

You gotta unleash the dragon, though.

I get the logic but why bring back Cutler if you aren't going to let him play his game?

I don't think that's going to do much to help the Bears decide if Cutler is the guy next year and beyond.

It's working though and it will help protect Jay (from injury and criticism), though I'm not sure the team cares about the latter and maybe not either at this point.

Was Jay really attempting a bunch of really deep throws?

The 17 yard pass is where the bread is buttered in this offense. Jay throws that pass well, and I don't see much of a change coming.

Yeah, deep was wrong. Over 15 yards past the line of scrimmage is more accurate. But my point was if McCown can throw for 350 3x in a row doing it, then why not keep Cutler on that same playbook if it also helps protect him from being hurt again.

McCown was throwing 15 yards past the line of scrimmage. He wasn't Orton out there. He had a higher YPA and YPC than Cutler.

percentage of pass attempts > 15 yards

Cutler: 21.4%

McCown: 16.8%

So a difference of 2 a game?

Not meaningful.

This could get very ugly for Jay. Even if they win he will be subject to crap if his numbers aren't similar to McCown's. Not fair, but that's the reality.
