I'm all for going nuts to get Tanaka, but I'm shocked so many people are disappointed on losing out on Ellsbury for that money. Or at least that's the way it sounds. No way in hell I'm giving him $21 million per season. Not even close. And that's even if we have a bunch of money to spend.

7 years at 22 per is near the upper bound of what I would've been willing to give Ellsbury, but I don't think it's an unreasonable deal at all.

I can respect the opinion, but I'm shocked people would think it's a reasonable deal. He's a fine but injury prone baseball player. That's pretty much it.

If they are going to give out a 22 million per season long-term contract, I want somebody much better.

Like somebody would command way more than 22M

Well at least we know the front office's pr campaign is working.

Yeah, no.

How else do you explain not being welling to pay "even close" to $21m to a player of that ability?

Furthermore, if their campaign is working, then why did I say I'm all for them going nuts for Tanaka?

Look, I was all for them going nuts on Tanaka, but this posting fee was ridiculous. I can't fault them for not going that high. It's craaaaaaaaazy

Because part of their campaign is "We'll pay up for guys entering their primes" which there just so happen to not be many of, but Tanaka happens to be.

True, but the sentiment seems to be that no one else was close to what the Yankees were offering, either. Again, I have no problem with the AAV, but with his injury history, I don't think that being shy about giving him more than five years is unreasonable at all.

Who cares who was closest to the Yankees? The market for a player is whatever the top team is bidding. This just sounds like more 2nd place medals to hang on our mantle. To repeat what somebody else said upthread, if you have issues with his injury history, and you admitted they were fluky injuries, not a sign of some sort of body breakdown why on Earth would you want him for 5 years?

But he's criticizing the Yankees going that high, too.

That said, I think Ellsbury is worth the contract and might even outperform it (especially if you take into account rising salaries going forward, but even without doing so).

I think we'll see Ellsbury hit more homers with that porch they've got. You have to pay for talent. If you want a guy really bad, you go get him. I would have been fine with 7/153 on Ellsbury.

Tanaka? If we somehow bid 93 mill on the PF(old system, just an example) and find out no one else was within 60 mill-I'm actually still OK with it.

I'll give Mike Trout at least 30 per season if he hits free agency at 25.

@PWSullivan

In a down year, Konerko ($2.5 mil) had 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 2013. Ellsbury ($153 mil) had nine home runs and 53 RBIs.

Not a bad deal for Wright, who has been quietly good the past couple years. That makes him, Russell and Rosscup lefties that could make the team next year. Does this mean a Russell trade could happen next week?

The Royals traded Will Smith to Milwaukee for Aoki.

That's a nice little deal for both teams really. Takes another potential Schierholtz landing spot out of the mix.

As long as the Diamondbacks stay in...

How does this thing treat balls that hit the green monster, just out of curiosity?

Mujica to the Red Sox for $9.5 million over two years. Assuming his shoulder problem is behind him that's a pretty good deal.

I thought the Cubs would be in on Mujica and would have loved him on that deal.

Didn't we hear that they were?

Doesn't mean he would've loved the Cubs on that deal.

I'm not a big Mujica fan personally. If that's the rate for a productive reliever without big stuff or K rates, then just add a starter and let Villanueva be that guy.

A $4.75m/year starter that is better than Villanueva? Do you have any? Isn't a lot of the point that this guy's walk rate is like half of Villanueva?

Well walking twice as many guys as Mujica is still very good control, it's the archetype I was aiming for, not replicating his production exactly. Villanueva as a reliever last year had an 8.8 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9, so you get extra K's as well.

As for replacing Villanueva in the rotation, there are some that might think that they have that now with Rusin(I don't personally). I've been campaigning for them to get 2 SP in return for Samardzija, so that's where the most likely replacement would come from. Rusin might have to start the season in the rotation depending on who that 2nd SP is though.

This is all a long way of saying I don't trust Mujica though. He rides the same thin line that Shawn Camp does, and with his shoulder injury and age I've not been all that high on him as a target.

But Camp walks more guys, strikes out less and hasn't actually ridden that same line as well as Mujica.
