Another pretty interesting day.

Cano to the Mariners at 10 years and $240 mil.

Granderson to the Mets for 4 years and $60 mil.

Feldman to the Astros for 3 years and $30 mil.

Kuroda to the Yankees for 1 year and $16 mil.

Not bad before lunch.

Guessing this will be the transaction that guys were tweeting about that will be a desperate GM move or whatever from the other day. If that's the case I'm guessing Zunino is involved as Hultzen/Walker have lost some luster.

Am I wrong, or is that a lot for Granderson?

And it's 10 years/$240. Jay-Z was really over his head on this one.

Why are you assuming Jay Z fixed it? Maybe one of the people involved who is actually a qualified agent smoothed things over.

You're right, I'm sure the old guys threw Jay-Z a couple of gold chains and some drugs and told him to go in another room and film another music video while the big boys hash out this very important sports contract.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Would you be this confident in Jay Z's acumen based on his entrepreneurial success if he were hired to run the Cubs?

Running a business is entirely different from negotiating contracts.

It's not a little, but if you think he won't be a disaster in the OF then there are worse deals you can make.

No, I think that's pretty fair.

Negotiating baseball contracts for a baseball player is entirely different from an artist negotiating his own record contracts.

before last year he had 84 HR in 2 seasons; it seems low to me and i'd really have loved to have him on those terms

Music contracts are a lot more complicated

I believe it. And also, it's not as if guys like Jay-Z or Scott Boras are brought in to haggle over contractual terms. He's there to close the main framework of a deal. For a baseball contract, that's dollars and years.

I like it too, he's avg. in CF and been healthy minus fluke injuries, his value drop will come from not playing CF with the Mets compared to the Cubs. When all is said and done, I think he'll end up worth that contract.

So long, Taijuan Walker.

What they really need is another bat or two.

That's what Hellickson will be for next year, once he rebounds.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that any package the Mariners put together for David Price would have to include Taijuan Walker.

It's certainly no surprise. The Mariners have a nice collection of young talent, but they'll have to part with their top prospect if they want to swing a deal for one of the game's best pitchers. Nick Franklin or Brad Miller are guys that could also be included in a package for Price, as the M's no longer have a starting spot for both of them with Robinson Cano on board.

They could get a much more useful player than Price in a Walker centered package, IMO. The M's still need another solid bat. Seager and Cano can't carry that offense, and Walker could be better than Price, but it's obvious they're going for it and don't want to wait around for him to blossom into his potential. I think trading him for Price is dumb. Without Price their rotation looks like it would include Iwakuma, Hernandez, Walker, and Paxton as their best 4 rotation options. That's not bad, all things considered. The years of control and cost on Walker along with his upside, to me, greatly outvalue anything Price would bring to that organization during his tenure there over the next two seasons.

It's totally true. I've never negotiated a baseball contract, but I've seen one and I know the CBA dictates a lot of terms or at least a framework. Not so in music contracts, esp when the artist has leverage like Jay Z does. The negotiation over his recording rights, publishing rights, and performance deals would be insane.

Wasn't there chatter before the trade deadline that the Mariners had really soured on Paxton? I'm thinking there was talk of flipping Olt for Paxton should the Cubs aquire him in the now completed Garza trade. Of course Olt hasn't rebounded. And Paxton had a nice showing at the MLB level.

He had a rough go of it at AAA this year but that was the only time in his short career he's really struggled. If they've soured on him after one season in AAA, I'd be more than happy to take him off their hands.

EDIT: This is a nice little scouting report on Paxton from earlier this year. I like him a lot.

I'm thinking it was a PSD "insider" rumor. So who knows. I too would be more than happy to take him off their hands.

(Sorry about the crazy edit.)

I meant the Mariners need another bat or two, certainly more than they need David Price. The idea of trading Walker for Price is pretty stupid, imo. If you're going to trade Walker, you do it for some offense.
