McCarver just said Ortiz 'is not a slow runner at all.' Yep, time for Tim to retire.

Every game is full of cringe worthy observations from old Timmy. Last week he said, "A walk is as good as a home run."

There was a Cubs game a few years back where he was incredulous that the stats guys ran the numbers and proved more score in an inning with a leadoff home run than those with a leadoff wlak.

now that bestfansstlouis guy is retweeting cardinal fans who are saying that the world series is rigged for boston to win because of the marathon bombing. Christ, what a bunch of rubes. i'm pretty sure that if mlb were in that business, they would've made the yankees win in 2001 instead of losing game 7 in pretty much the most heartbreaking way possible.

"We had our friends at Stats, Inc. check and see whether more multi-run innings came with a lead off homer or a lead off walk. You would think that a lead off walk would lead to more big innings than a lead off home run. Not true. A lead off home run, this year, has lead to more multi-run innings than lead off walks. It's against conventional thinking."

Glad those jerkass Canadians didn't rig the Stanley Cup finals in favor of #Bostonstrong.

Why would anyone think that a leadoff walk would lead to more runs? Seriously, what the [expletive]?

Those are the same people who think a 3 run home run is a rally killer because the pitcher can relax without all those men on base.

I can *kind* of see why they might think that a leadoff walk leads to more multiple-run innings than a leadoff home run. The defensive inefficiency of holding on a runner, putting the pitcher into a stretch. But the chance for a DP completely buries those factors.

I can see a theoretical argument in defense of one person believing that, but I don't know how conventional wisdom could hold that opinion.

Chip would have the leadoff hitter get on then waste 2 outs getting him to 3b, just to orgasm over a 2 out rbi.

The run expectancy with a runner on 1st and none out is about 45%. With none on and none out, it's about 30%. I'm pretty sure the run expectancy when you hit a home run is 100%. So you already have a run in, and only lose 15% of run expectancy going forward.

Plus it's just common [expletive] sense.

it amazes me how people who are seemingly intelligent and seem to have common sense just completely lose any sense of such things when sports come into play

Your spotted one run on a race to two (the minimum for a multirun inning).

This is a pretty tough choice...

Or, you can have a man on 1B with 0 runs yet produced, with the ability to be picked off, caught stealing, doubled up, or thrown out going for the extra base.

Not to mention pretty much any sequence of events that happens with the hitters hitting 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, etc in that inning that produce two runs in out of a leadoff walk would assuredly produced a second run had the leadoff homer took place instead.
