Damn, Yankees.

Rany Jazayerli @jazayerli

That's $175M for Tanaka, and, what, $50-100M for not resetting the luxury tax? That means his true cost is $225-275M for 7 years.

More perspective:

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

The Yankees invested $175 million for seven years of Masahiro Tanaka -- the exact same deal to which Seattle signed Felix Hernandez.

Not to be a dick, but that perspective is pointless. No use comparing guys on the open market to a guy locking in early with his team.

Haha don't see how that's dickish.

Also, didn't realize we could say "dick" here.

You haven't always been able to. I thank former coach Dick Pole for the change.

So who is the next mid-20's potential TOR pitcher that we go after in FA?

2015:

Homer Bailey - 29

Jon Lester - 31

Justin Masterson - 30

Max Scherzer - 30

So...CJ Edwards?

Surely Samardzija is going to be moved now. No sense in keeping him around for the next 2 years when the best we can realistically hope for is some fringe contention in 2015 if the young guys come up and are awesome

$25 million/yr should buy a pretty good FA pitcher next year.

yeah except nobody wants to come play for theo epstein's personal science project/dumpster fire.

We also have #4 draft pick this year which could be turned into a better pitcher than Tanaka as well.

he could also cure cancer which would be great PR for the team.

Happily, we can pencil in a top 5 pick now that we don't have to worry about being competitive.

Plus if we sign 4 mediocre guys for the same money we'll get similar production.

If you really feel that way (which I don't necessarily disagree with), then adding a 3-4 win pitcher over, IDK, Paul Maholm at 2 wins or something, probably wasn't going to make much of an impact on those top 5 draft pick chances.

It obviously would've been a lot more fun to get him, though (that's not sarcasm).

I was being sarcastic. I'm just aggravated .

Thankfully Yu Darvishes and Masahiro Tanakas just grow on trees.

So north of $30 mil/yr when you add it all up.

Whoa.

Sure; that #4 pick will be ready to contribute maybe in 4 years, so we've got that going for us.

David Kaplan @thekapman

Industry source tells me there were more teams bidding than the 5 reported. Ichiro/Kuroda big influence on decision.

But but.....Fujikawa and that other dude that we invited to ST. DIDNT THEY SHOW HIM THE YOUTUBE VIDEO OF FUKUDOMES HR ON OPENING DAY?

This really, really blows. But anybody expecting otherwise was just trying to fool themselves.

This sums up how I feel. Sucks to miss out on Tanaka though.

I wanted Tanaka, but after seeing the final numbers I have a feeling we aren't gonna be that disappointed in a few years.

Then you didn't actually want him

Seriously. There was little doubt that he was not going to be worth the contract. It was all about being able to get a 25 year old TOR arm.

plz don't respond to me and go bitch and moan to someone in your real life

We still have Baez to look forward to. Remember? The #1 prospect in all of baseball? I don't think it's going to be all that long till we compete. At the start of 2015 we will have Rizzo, Castro, Baez and Bryant and Almora and Soler + others all knocking on the door.

Let's just make Tanaka regret he chose the team on the downslope.

Kaplan tweeted we came in second, non contention kept us from offering higher.

[expletive] it, just trade Shark now. 2015 pretty much just went out the realistic window.

Man, if there was some sort of participation trophy for effort we'd have it on lock. Unfortunately who gives a [expletive] if we "finished second". Stunning that a terrible team wasn't able to convince a guy to play here instead of in NY for the same money and a somewhat decent team.

Apparently our wave after wave of prospects pitch wasn't convincing.

We'll win more games over the life of Tanaka's deal than the Yanks will. Even with us sucking in 2014.

And 2015. If Tanaka opts out after 4 I'd bet on the yankees

Damn

Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith

#Yankees have committed $483 million to free agents this winter (approximately 24% of all MLB free agent spending).

That's not the "right way"

I read that the Cubs presentation focused on making Tanaka the face of the franchise. They really knew what this guy wanted.

Wouldn't you think that Garza on an Edwin Jackson-type contract has a higher value to the Cubs than if they got Tanaka on the Yankees' terms? Although maybe Garza doesn't want to play for a losing team either.
