Kaplan tweeted we came in second, non contention kept us from offering higher.

[expletive] it, just trade Shark now. 2015 pretty much just went out the realistic window.

Man, if there was some sort of participation trophy for effort we'd have it on lock. Unfortunately who gives a [expletive] if we "finished second". Stunning that a terrible team wasn't able to convince a guy to play here instead of in NY for the same money and a somewhat decent team.

Apparently our wave after wave of prospects pitch wasn't convincing.

We'll win more games over the life of Tanaka's deal than the Yanks will. Even with us sucking in 2014.

Do you realize that the Yankees of 2013 were a much luckier and only slightly better version of the 2013 Cubs (and that's with a sell-off at the deadline)?

is there a nearby dairy queen we can spend the money on instead?

weird that the best FA in the class doesn't want to play for a team with three straight 90 loss seasons. must not subscribe to BA.

the yankees near-term looks iffy at best and long term looks horrific. if his advisers steered him that way based on an opportunity to win, they're not very good.

yeah the cubs and their yearly firesale in an effort to get high draft picks just scream WINNERS.

ABTY still thinks Cubs had highest bid, for what that's worth:

Ty Youngfelt @TyYoungfelt

Yanks offer got close enough to Cubs where money was no longer factor...Cubs still had more $ on table

I'm telling you, it's his wife's fault.

It very well could have, and probably likely, came down to subjective reasons for him. But I wonder if the opt out played a role, maybe we refused to offer one.

I also realize that they had 3/4ths of their team injured.

I'm not saying the Yankees are awesome, but if the money's even, less bad + NY is going to trump dumpster fire+maybe we'll have some rookies be good in 2015.

Yea, still not that confident in the Yankees long term. They're gonna have a really hard time in that division, even with their recent additions.

Damn

Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith

#Yankees have committed $483 million to free agents this winter (approximately 24% of all MLB free agent spending).

Happily, we can pencil in a top 5 pick now that we don't have to worry about being competitive.

Plus if we sign 4 mediocre guys for the same money we'll get similar production.

More perspective:

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

The Yankees invested $175 million for seven years of Masahiro Tanaka -- the exact same deal to which Seattle signed Felix Hernandez.

Posted

I also realize that they had 3/4ths of their team injured.

And the Cubs traded away a bunch of players with 1/4 of the year or so to go.

Not to be a dick, but that perspective is pointless. No use comparing guys on the open market to a guy locking in early with his team.

Surely Samardzija is going to be moved now. No sense in keeping him around for the next 2 years when the best we can realistically hope for is some fringe contention in 2015 if the young guys come up and are awesome

Haha don't see how that's dickish.

Also, didn't realize we could say "dick" here.

Players nowhere near the same caliber as the ones NY lost. Unless you think Mark Texieria is on a similar par with David DeJesus.

I get what you are saying, and again, I understand NY isnt a good team. But they are a lot better than we are.

In terms of dreaminess, the Cubs clearly suffered the greater loss.

If you really feel that way (which I don't necessarily disagree with), then adding a 3-4 win pitcher over, IDK, Paul Maholm at 2 wins or something, probably wasn't going to make much of an impact on those top 5 draft pick chances.

It obviously would've been a lot more fun to get him, though (that's not sarcasm).

It's pointless in the sense of comparing the signings, but not so pointless in the sense that each team is still paying on average $25MM/year of their respective budget per player.

Uhhh Soriano (who hilariously for this comparison ended up helping the Yankees hugely too)? Garza?

$25 million/yr should buy a pretty good FA pitcher next year. Doesn't have to change the timeline.

We also have #4 draft pick this year which could be turned into a better pitcher than Tanaka as well.

You guys should have known it was going to end poorly when we started comparing this to Roberts and Peavy.

This just joins a long list of potential high profile player acquisitions that I obsessed over only to be disappointed in the end.

Roberts (ok maybe not too high profile)

Peavy

Cespedes

Tanaka

LeBron

Amare (back when he was good)

Kobe

Probably another I'm missing

On the bright side, I was semi-obsessed over getting Soler and that one came through for the good guys!

Posted
I wanted Tanaka, but after seeing the final numbers I have a feeling we aren't gonna be that disappointed in a few years.

We'll just be disappointed at how shitty the team is.

Kinda irrelevant, but I did find this funny:

Anthony Castrovince @castrovince

Yankees have spent $465M this winter. And they still don't have a 3B.

Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 1m

#Yankees #dodgers #Cubs were finalist for Tanaka. #Yankees went from 6 yr offer to 7 in past few days, told without that could not do deal
