I'm in the camp that if we can trade Shark for Taillon and Glasnow or for Bradley and Skaggs-its good enough to make the deal. But I wouldn't trade Wood for Bundy. As Kyle has mentioned repeatedly, we're not to the point of punting 2014. Taillon or Bradley could at least potentially replace Shark next year. Bundy can't do that for Wood and is too risky as it is, to make that deal, in my mind.

I respectfully challenge anybody here to await the next time Jim Callis, John Sickels, or Ben Badler hold a chat and ask them if the Orioles would trade Dylan Bundy for Travis Wood. They will respectfully suggest that the Orioles would want a much bigger return. Keith Law would give a similar reply, only not as politely worded.

The rumor was refuted by a few different sources. Even if it was true though, the SS market is basically Ramirez and sadness, so they could probably afford to play hardball for a little while.

if that is what's rumored to be offered for SS's, I wouldn't mind listening.

Make sure to give a follow up question asking what that would do to the Cubs' chances of being competitive next year.

In a vacuum, Bundy probably has more value than Wood as long as his medicals check out. But punting that value until 2016 is not worth it considering the still-high chance that Bundy flames out.

I don't think he put that well at all. It's a meaningless comment. What they theoretically "could" have had isn't particularly meaningful, since it's all speculation and they were trading away a bunch of flawed guys in the first place.

You can disagree but you know you are wrong. How is any of what they've done emphasizing the now over the longterm value? Now isn't a guy who might make the team next year. The fact that they acquired guys who can play in AA or AAA doesn't mean they are emphasizing the now, at all.

Trading for guys like Olt, Grimm, Arrieta and Strop emphasizes a more near-term approach than trading for higher ceiling, lower-level types.

Plus the fact that of all the guys they traded, the only ones they had control over for more than the rest of the season they were traded were Maholm and Soriano. How about signing Jackson to a 4 year deal? They've done a bunch of stuff that indicates near term desire to compete, meaning next year, not this year.

The Orioles would surely say no for a Bundy/Wood swap, but that alone does not necessarily mean that it'd be a good trade for the Cubs. My big issue with Bundy isn't just the TJS, it's that plus the fact he's pitched like 17 innings in AA and another 1.2 or whatever in the majors. IOW, given the fact that he just had TJS in June, it's possible that you're not getting any above-replacement-level MLB innings as a starter until mid-2015, if not later. I recall that the Orioles hadn't really ever properly stretched him out as a starter in the minors even prior to his injury; that added to the fact he'd likely start in AA once he's healthy, and you could be looking at quite awhile before he's ready -- physically or otherwise -- to start for the Cubs.

Now Shark for Gausman AND Bundy would have my attention, but I doubt the Os would do that either. (If I were them I would think long and hard about it, though; as has been mentioned often, the Orioles are similar to the Pirates and that they should absolutely cash in their prospects now while they can, given the perennial strength of the divisions they play in.)

The Mets say that they'd have to be blown away to deal Marlon Byrd, haha.

That reminds me of how frustrated I was when Jim Hendry was "not motivated" to trade Carlos Pena at the deadline in 2011.

Not that it really makes it better, but didn't it later come out that his reasoning is that he had been fired already (and was sticking on to sign the draft picks) so he didn't feel comfortable making roster moves.

If we were to trade Wood for Bundy and then go with what we have for 2014, that would certainly hurt our chances of competing. However, I can't imagine that being the case. We have some cash for free agents, enough minor league depth for the right trade, and of course Theo's ability to make the most out of the scrap heap.

Rumors that Pirates would trade Glasnow to get Bud Norris.

They're also close to getting Rios from the White Sox.

That probably takes them out on Schierholtz. I feel like we may only be trading Gregg by the time the dust settles tomorrow evening.

I would be pretty happy with that. This is the first deadline I can remember where I'm hoping for as little activity from the Cubs as possible.

Is it even worth trading Gregg? I can't believe he'd net anyone that would even end up in the Cubs top 30.

It's either that, or wait for him to turn back into a pumpkin. I'm really pretty indifferent about it.

Hopefully we can get another Leal for him. That would be completely worthwhile.
