no, but there's really nothing to play for, so why not minimize the risk by playing him now?

Not sure what you mean. I'm saying Lake should play everyday now. No reason not to. Put Lake in LF everyday and DeJesus in CF or vice versa, doesn't really matter to me.

Keith Law said no. Oh, that's right, [expletive] Keith Law.

I'm gonna miss Soriano, he was mostly good for his time here and by all accounts had fantastic work ethic and was a great teammate. Definitely didn't deserve 99% of the [expletive] the meatballs talked about him.

Keith Law is probably right that he's not very good, but there isn't really anything to lose by doing so, unless you think Lake has a lot of developing left to do in the minor leagues that would be stunted or wouldn't happen with an everyday gig on the Cubs.

I wonder if Sori will be on the bench since he's still technically on the team. That must be weird given these particular circumstances.

I like how everyone is trying to overcompensate for all the people who treated him so "poorly."

There does seem to be an attempt to set the record straight so all the idiots who hate Soriano realize how idiotic they are. Although, as dumb as they are they may not comprehend.

The ESPN article said he took batting practice and is in uniform. I presume he'll be on the bench.

The treatment of this potential trade by the media is very unique. They basically paid tribute to Sori on the pre-game telecast on WGN. Thanking him for his contributions, etc. I'm sure he's close to being dealt - and it's probably close to 100% - but what if something happened and it fell through (medical reasons, for instance). Like others have said before, it's just odd how open literally everyone has been about this not-yet-official trade.

I think the only thing that's holding it up is the commissioners approval (because more than $1 mil changed hands) and a signed document that says Soriano waived his 10/5. It's very unlikely the commissioner rejects it so its pretty much a formality at this point and even Theo/Jeds trend for having seemingly complete deals improbably fall through can't derail this.

If someone would have told me a few years ago that I would be a little sad when Soriano left the Cubs, I would have thought that person was crazy.

There was a time when I wanted nothing more than for Soriano to be off the Cubs' roster, but he has completely changed my opinion of him over the past few seasons. He is certainly a flawed player, but I appreciate the fact that he wants to be in the lineup every single day and the work that he has seemingly put in to address the flaws in his game (like his defense).

A big part of me would have liked to see him finish his contract with the Cubs, but if the Cubs get a little salary relief and a decent prospect out of this deal then I can't argue with that result. It's too bad he had to go to the Yankees though instead of a real contender.

:bye: Really going to miss Soriano. As much as I know this is the right thing to do (assuming they get reasonable value in return) it still really sucks to see him go.

Wait. Heyman saying Cubs expected to pay "more than half" his salary.

If we actually save more than 4 or 5 million on this, that's a huge win.

Was thinking that too. Hopefully Heyman isn't just massively understating things.

Also, this...

Cubs Rumor Thread: A new, intriguing pitcher, Corey Black, has entered the mix as a possible return for Soriano. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/cubs-rumor-thread-nate-schierholtz-garnering-significant-interest-and-other-non-soriano-notes/

UPDATE: 9:12 PM: Josh Norris, who is the beat writer for theTrenton Thunder for the Trentonian, is tweeting that he's hearing RHP Corey Black may be involved. Of all the names mentioned, he's the one that intrigues me the most. He's undersized, but has similar athleticism and build as Travis Wood. He can also bring it, able to pitching last year at 95-98 with sinking movement with some reports that he touched 100 mph in instructional league. His changeup is solid and his secondaries lag behind, though the slider is further along than the curve. He has struck out 9.58 batters per 9 innings and although he has walked 4.90 per 9 IP, he does have the kind of athleticism to repeat his delivery and develop better command.

For some reason when I think of Soriano, no matter what, the first thing that pops in my head was that hater around here who tried to coin the nickname "Sorry, I Know" for all of his poor play at the time he was criticizing him. The sheer ridiculousness of that attempt at making a pun is ingrained in my memory. And I hate it

That's a very valid and reasonable point. There has to be more legs to this than most "rumored trades". I believe it came down to the Yankees money and getting the finances right regarding luxury tax. That would make the apparent nature in which this trade has been openly discussed, plausible.

If we got Black and 6+ million I'd be pretty pleased with that result.

Not ashamed to say that Soriano has earned a spot in my Top 10 list of all-time favorite Cubs.

Will be missed.

Don't know about top ten, but he'll always be a Cub to me. The term gets overused, but he's been a class act throughout.

Agreed.

Either way, I did at one point disliked Soriano a lot back then, but I have grown to tolerate him because of what he brought to the team, his work ethic, that he was a good all around person.

He isn't perfect by any means, but I am also aware that he isn't the worst.

Good luck in NY Soriano, and thanks for everything you gave to the Cubs.
