After reports that the Yankees were talking to the Cubs about Soriano, President Theo Epstein spoke with the veteran outfielder after Tuesday’s game at Chase Field, outlining his options and giving him a blunt analysis of the team’s desire to move on.

“He asked for a couple days to think about it,” Epstein said. “He said he’ll get back to us in a couple days and let us know where he’ll go, if anywhere, and then at that point it’s up to us if we want to move forward and finalize a deal.”

The Yankees really got issues at 3B with Youk injuries and ARod's fiasco. I wonder how interested the Yankees would be in Vitters (or Olt) as sweetener in a Soriano trade in order to get a better package. Looking at their numbers, Brent Lillibridge, David Adams and Louis Cruz are astonishingly bad.

Vitters isn't going to sweeten anything, and Olt is far more valuable than anything the Yankees are likely to include in a Soriano trade (although I'd love to be wrong on that).

At this stage, Valbuena would be more of a sweetener than Vitters, no?

I'd love to shift Valbuena to second and call up Olt down the road. I would guess Barney wouldn't fetch much from teams seeking help at SS or 2B?

IMO we shouldn't be trading young, low cost guys for more prospects that eventually can become other young, low cost guys.

If the Yankees want a "sweetener" they can take Ransom, not guys that can actually help the Cubs win down the road.

Paul Sullivan wrote an article about no-trade clauses today. Don't mind the fact that Soriano's been a 10-5 guy for almost two years now, Sully. Nothing to see here.

Muskat just tweeted about a lineup change for tonight's game and implored us to stay tuned. Soriano is in the lineup at the moment.

Five minutes later, Soriano is indeed out of the lineup and Sveum says a trade to New York is close at hand.

Theo, Jed, and Sveum have been almost shockingly public about this ordeal. Makes me worry about the return/money saved.

I'm not sure what there is to be worried about. We're trading a 37-year-old outfielder who hits at about league average and has a year-plus and over $20M left on his deal. What do we really expect?

That said, I'm going to miss him. Been a fun guy to watch play here for the most part over the last 6-plus years.

Sori was on my poop lost I til my son took a liking to him. I've been a big fan ever since. Kinda sad that my kids favorite player is leaving, but it happens.

I'll always be a soriano fan. I'm guessing he hangs it up after next year.

Cubs would get a lower-tier pitching prospect if they finish the Soriano deal with the Yankees. They are waiting for his formal waiver

Reasonable deal if the Yankees are paying a solid chunk of his contract. Don't see much reason to give away a league average player who's popular with his teammates, pay most of his contract, and only get a middling prospect in return.

If the Yankees' deal with the Cubs happens, Chicago would eat the bulk of the money owed to Soriano, about $25m.

So at this point, it's just clearing space for young guys to play I guess.

I have trouble reconciling the Cubs eating "bulk" of salary & getting "lower-tier pitching prospect," but we'll get there when we get there.

A ball pitcher according to Tribune

The Cubs are expected to receive a Class-A pitcher and pay most of the remainder of Soriano's contract, which runs through 2014.

"Theo (Epsteon) called and said it was pretty close to being done," Sveum said. "So we're better off not playing him."
