I still don't understand why college baseball coaches are never brought up in these discussions. If managing is just personality management, instruction/development and just reading the stats and making the right moves, plenty of college coaches could do that much more effectively than just another retread. The best college coach available would probably be better than most of the MLB guys and a safer bet (and they would probably come much cheaper).

Coaches in the NFL and NBA get respect even if they haven't played in the NFL/NBA. Baseball's baseball, especially with the new bats in college.

Sports radio, TV and newspaper is going to be pretty much completely intolerable for a few weeks now. Not to mention that no matter who gets hired now, people are going to bitch and moan about it.

If that's the case then they're idiots because this was completely out of the Cubs' hands. There was nothing they could do with Girardi until the World Series is over, it's not their fault he opted to re-up with the Yankees before the championship series even begin.

If what we've heard about the Cubs making it known that they'd be willing to top any NYY offer is true, there's absolutely nothing more they could have done.

I have a clear preference for Acta but would be fine if it's Hinch.

Lovullo or Martinez please.

Seeing Martinez next to Maddon last night swayed me . . .

I doubt a team would have them go from the collegiate ranks right to MLB, there have been coaches going from college to the minors. I think it would have to be someone with a MLB pedigree like Erstad (who coaches at Nebraska) to ever break that barrier.

Maddon can frustrate similar to LaRussa, he's an overmanager.

I still have no idea we saw so little of Joyce.

Yes - he also falls in love with certain guys that have no business playing. He played Sam Fuld quite a bit the last few weeks of the season (check out Fuld's stats for a good laugh) and the decsion to start Hellickson instead of Archer or even Moore on 3 days rest in game 4 was strange as well.

Which doesn't mean Martinez will . . . I like that he is creative and thinks. LaRussa was pretty damn successful no matter how frustrating he might have been. I'm not sure that was because of his strategy during games though.

who is lovullo

Some guy uk has mentioned for every opening in the system for the last 8 years

I keep it consistent. I still think Dierker over Baker was the right move.

I always liked the idea of hiring Dierker, but I think how he basically walked away from baseball after 2001 shows that that was always a pipe dream.

Who were the other names being tossed around before the Cubs hired Dusty? I've shut that time out of my brain.

I know Bochy was a big name that was considered.

Others from an old ESPN article:

Hendry was to meet Tuesday night and Wednesday with Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach Bob Melvin.

....he's interviewed Ken Macha, bench coach for the Oakland Athletics; Fredi Gonzalez, manager of the Atlanta Braves Triple-A team; and Buck Showalter, former manager of the Yankees and Diamondbacks.
