Basically, it's Levine making [expletive] up.

And for the life of me, I can not figure out why so many people are so convinced that Greg Maddux would be a great manager.

Because he's really [expletive] baseball smart and ultra-competitive. Boy, the Sandberg lovers would go apoplectic.

What the WHAT?

Several commenters last night indicated that Bruce Levine said on Sports Talk Live with Dave Kaplan that he hears Greg Maddux wants the Cubs’ managerial gig, with Mike Maddux as pitching coach, Bobby Cox as bench coach, and Henry Blanco as bullpen coach. I was not watching last night, and I cannot find any repackaged video of that particular moment, so I can’t personally vouch for what Levine said. He has previously indicated that Maddux could be interested in the job, however, so it’s plausible. Anyone have a transcript or a video to review? Either way, that precise setup coming into play seems unlikely.

I watched the show last night. I didn't see the whole thing, but I did watch the entire segment on the Cubs. That wasn't said while I was watching.

Why is that?

I agree with him, and I think it's this meatball idea that an ex-Chicago sports star coming home and making good is some kind of ideal fantasy that should be preferred over an outsider.

In order to understand the Cubs, you need to have PLAYED for the Cubs.

So how does that mean that Maddux being hired would piss off the Sandberg lovers?

The Cubs told Sandberg he had to pay his dues in the minors.

I'm not advocating for Greg.

Gotcha. Didn't see that angle.

Good lord, my bad. I read his post completely opposite. I thought he was saying Sandberg lovers would be overjoyed at the idea that there's another ex-Cub star in play for the job.

LOL, I'm a dolt.

Hendry told Sandberg he had to pay his dues in the minors then hired Quade over Sandberg after those dues had been paid. Theo ruled out Sandberg right away using the excuse of lack of big league experience. I'm guessing the real reason Theo wouldn't touch Sandberg at the time is because it was very possible that the fans would have either turned on Theo for giving Sandberg the rebuilding rosters or it would have hurt Sandberg's legacy and Theo didn't want any part of that potential mess. Can you imagine the outcry right now if we were replacing Sandberg instead of Sveum with all the people crying about how Sandberg never got a fair shot.

I'm guessing it was much more of a philosophical difference than any concern about Sandberg's legacy.

I'm pretty sure the primary reason Theo didn't want Sandberg is because their ideologies were incompatible. The potential for a mess like you've described could well have been an ancillary factor, though.

Im ok with Maddux if he brings his brother and he toes the company line or whatever but the idea that the right guy for the job is ALSO the best pitcher in team history who has all the history with the team that he does is pretty far fetched.

How would Theo know if he and Sandberg were compatible or not in their philosophies when there was no interview to discuss it. I just don't see Theo as caring enough about Sandberg while he was managing in the minors to watch him at all much less enough to know if they would have meshed philosophically.

ryne sandberg will never be a successful major league manager because he is an entitled blowhard incredibly out of touch with modern baseball

Because Theo could make a few phone calls and hear from each person he spoke to that Sandberg went to the prestigious A-1 Meatball School of Old School Management and graduated Valedictorian and with the honors of Head Meatball and Dusty 2.0.

Sandberg had a laughably terrible sports column for, what, Yahoo? Anyone reading that would take about two seconds to figure out he's a meatball extraordinaire.

Sandberg had spent all of three years managing in the minors when Quade was hired. That's not much of resume for a big league manager.

I'd pump the breaks on Maddux being the greatest pitcher in our history. If it's our history then his braves years are thrown out, if that's the case he can't touch Mordecai Brown.

It's a lot closer than you'd think.

I know it's close, just not the slam dunk it should be. Stupid Cubs letting Maddux walk.

I'm guessing the thought behind having Bobby Cox as a bench coach would be more as a mentor to someone with no coaching experience. That being said, I'd highly doubt Bobby Cox would take such a role... though, he does seem to have a close relationship with Greg. Either way, I think it would be pretty awesome.
