Bernstein says that the Cubs are disappointed, they thought they had the better job, and that Girardi knew they were offering more money. That Girardi knew what the Cubs were offering, but couldn't get past the family issues and that's why he's staying in NY.

It is funny to look back on all of the hype surrounding Girardi's possible return, like somehow he was going to look past how terrible the Cubs have been and leave an organization like the Yankees.

 

In my opinion the biggest positive of signing Girardi was that he would probably not come to the Cubs without some reassurance that there was a plan in place to win in the short term and not the current endless rebuilding project.

I think a very, very strong case could be made that the Cubs have a better near to mid term outlook than the Yankees do. And apparently this came down to family/location, not the job itself.

It's much easier to see us with a 110 mill payroll and a contending roster in 2014 than it is to see the Yanks at 200 mill with one. They're going to be stuck for a while.
