Girardi's Cubs career is such a weird blind spot for me; it blows my mind that he played seven seasons with them. Outside of the Kile announcement I can't remember a damn thing about him as a Cub.

You don't remember the 3 headed catching monster of Joe Girardi, Damon Berryhill and Rick Wrona? I remember that I was 16 and wanted Wrona to start more games.

Holy [expletive], he WAS part of that. Why can't I remember him?!?

He was the first Cubs catcher I remember seeing when I first started watching the Cubs. Until I just recently looked up his stats (as in 30 minutes ago), I thought he was serviceable offensively. He was not. He was pretty awful. Like really awful. Like he has to be on a list as one of the worst offensive catchers of the last 30 years to get regular playing time type awful.

Damn, this made me Fangraph a bunch of old Cubs. Keith Moreland was a sub 6 WAR guy for his career. Hell, Leon Durham was only 15. Jerome Walton and Dwight Smith combined were under 6. Girardi was 5.5, but wow, the offense WAS anemic. I had kind of remembered him as a .675ish OPS, superior glove type.

For the love of all that is holy:Shawon was a career 7.3 WAR player.

This surprises you?

Weird thing about Girardi is that I only started watching the Cubs in 1995, but when I saw him on the Rockies and Yankees, I always recognized him as a former Cub.

I don't remember that much from his second stint here...other than the Kile thing. I was, in fact, well aware that he wasn't very good, though.

Not anymore, but I remember him being one of the first players I looked up when the lights switched on stats-wise and a little part of younger me dying inside when I saw the truth. I wasn't expecting him to be good, but man, that was ugly.

Yeah, I remembered him with more power than what he hit for, thought he stole 25+ a year, with average defense. I would have guessed he had a 15-20 career WAR. Just didn't pay nearly as close attention as a kid. Plus, where I grew up(mountains of WNC) we didn't have cable access until I was a freshman in college. So, newspaper box scores was basically all I had. Very few memories of watching these guys play, other than the one series a year we'd see them in Atlanta live.

In august if 89 I attended my first game ar wrigley. After the game, my folks took me to the players parking lot for autographs. I got a couple, but girardi was the only one that paid us any attention. He spent a good 10 minutes shooting the [expletive] with me (12 years old) and my folks. That's worth 25 wars.

Yep, that's always the first thing that pops in my head.

Sort-of related, I feel like a good way to test if you're dealing with a Cubs' die-hard (presuming they're old enough to have seen it) is to ask if they know who the three players in that rundown were. Random thing that only lunatics like us remember, I'm sure.

I'm willing to bet there aren't more than 3 people who remember that.

I totally hated Girardi as a player for us, not having the patience for his fucken [expletive] hitting

thinking about those early-90s teams and WGN broadcasts when I started getting Cubs-obsessed makes me feel weirdly old and wistful

Why do I want to say Auggie Ojeda?

I was at that game too. I think I might even still have the radio call saved somewhere.

@BleacherNation 5h

RT @MLBBruceLevine Greg Maddux possible for Cub job .Maybe brother interviewing for same gig. Source said either bro can be impact manager.

I really want the Maddux bros.

That would be the ultimate marketing/PR move, IMO, and the one that would likely fit the theory of stick all the offseason money in the coaching staff and not into significant additions/make the excuse why no significant additions were made because all the time and energy was stuck in getting the Maddux Bros in here.

Anyone know where there is video of that play? I keep trying to find it.

Also, shockingly, Girardi was an All-Star in his second stint with the Cubs.

I have the '89 starting lineup memorized with him in it batting 8th. And I think he hit a home run once right after I told my dad he sucked. But those are my only memories of him.
