So McCoy is getting hired in SD. With Arians cancelling his Eagles interview, I'm thinking the odds on him getting the Bears job just jumped by a lot.

Chargers reportedly on the verge of hiring McCoy as their new HC. Guess that means we're down to Trestman or Arians.

Edited to say looks like Banedon beat me by a few minutes.

Or Bevell?

Dont sleep on Will Beatty. He's a pretty good young lineman. He's a nice fallback option.

Good call. Seems like a better chance he hits free agency than Clady or Albert and doesn't have the risk Long has.

Biggs reports that Dave Toub will definitely not return to the Bears under a new head coach. Most likely heading to KC.

That blows. Time to find out how good he was.

Please hire Arians

why, because he was in the news and everyone recognizes his name? luck may have had a prolific year, but it wasn't particularly efficient.

He was also a rookie

Yeah, last I heard he was still in the mix.

I really like that the Bears are clearly breaking from the defense-first mentality. It would have been more like the franchise to pick up another defensive-minded coach, even in the face of the entire league going the other direction.

I'll give any of these 3 candidates a shot at it. Should be interesting either way. And, I think, with an offensive-minded HC and Marinelli being given the keys to the defense, the chances of success are higher.

I would guess the chances of the defensive staff staying intact under Arians are less than if either of the other two get the gig. He's been in the NFL for a long time and has worked with many coaches. The other two have a more limited NFL resumes and presumably, trusted contacts ready willing and able to fill out their staff.

Hearing some of these interviews regarding Trestman has me a little more open minded on him than I was.

W&S are about to replay their interview with Steve Young.

I'm willing to give Emery the benefit of the doubt here.

I can't find a reason to give Emery the benefit of the doubt. I don't think he deserves it at this point.

I can. All the smart stuff he said at the press conference when Lovie was fired along with the comments on him being the most prepared GM ever seen by two of the interviewees.

i can't think of any reasons at all why people interviewing for a job would say good things about the person who interviewed them and is making the hiring decision

....The comments were reported by Schefter and had no names attached to them. But lets hear your take on some more things you don't know anything about.

you want me to post about why anyone ever thought you were worthy? that's weird

Obviously you want balance but its clearly becoming an offensive league. The Packers went 15-1 last year and had the worst defense in the league. All 8 teams that played last weekend scored at least 30 points I believe. Defense is still important and there are teams that still succeed with great defenses, the Bears D dragged a pathetic offense to 10-6 just last year. But if we were going to lean one way over another, I would prefer it to be towards offense at this point.

I don't want to be bottom 5 in either so if we just shift the other way, I'll feel more or less the same. But then you also have to factor in ST. If they stop being elite at that also, we're probably worse off. So how far does his offense-only mindset extend? Yes I'd rather be better at offense, but not to same the extreme we were only defense. Its great the Packers went 15-1, but regular season success hasn't correlated in the NFL the way it does in the NBA. They won the SB when they had a more respectable D.

As far as jersey's point below, yes you aren't competing for individual players time. So on individual activities you din't lose out. But with limited rosters when you are doing team activities you're pretty limited to working on either tour offense or defense. Full 11 man reps against a prep team matter. Add in special teams and you aren't getting in offense or defense work either. So a coach needs to find the time to get all phases reps during practice. Repson offense do matter more because of timing, but even with that in mind, balance has to be present.

I actually think after hearing how complimentary Young and Gannon are towards him, he's at the top of my list. Arians may be my least favorite of the 3, the more involved things have gotten.

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

would not be surprised at all if Bears chose head coach today/tonight and announce it by Wed afternoon ...

Also,

Jeff Dickerson ‏@ESPNChiBears

Still under contract in Dallas, #Cowboys ST coach Joe DeCamillis believed to be interested in #Bears job formerly held by Dave Toub.

Not sure how that would work given his contract status.

Also, Decamillis interviewed for the Bears HC job, so that's kinda weird to then take the ST job.

I don't get the strong opinions voiced about people where we really have almost no info to judge. It's not like any of the candidates have been head coaches before.

Of course he might suck but I like the idea of Trestman because it seems like he's risky but has a high upside. And this is a move that the old Bears would never make.

Terry Boers just said that McCoy wasn't crazy about Cutler. *shrug*

But he likes Rivers?

Apparently potential head coaching candidates were really excited about the San Diego vacancy for a chance to work with Rivers. They must not have seen Phillip the past few years or they really just want to live in San Diego.

Why would Trestman have this unparalleled upside potential? And Bruce Ariens was pretty much a head coach this past year.

I sense that out of all the coaches on the board, Trestman has the most potential to pull some gimmick offense out of his butt that takes the league by storm.

Now that McCoy has gone to another team, it's obvious he's a terrible coach and the Chargers have made a huge mistake.
