Arians canceled an interview with Philly for tomorrow. Guess it's possible he's still in it with us? Trestman vs Bevell? Not sure I have a favorite, but either is OK with me.

Blah. Like others here I want to be excited about the new hire and not simply relegated to trust Emery. I would love to know what Trestman has that the other candidates don't, besides CFL coaching experience.

How much film study and game planning has this guy had against other NFL teams since 2002?

Of course, you could look at this another way...

He'll likely hire assistants that can help prep for other teams, but nobody is going to have a book on this guy at all.

I'm willing to give Emery the benefit of the doubt here. But I hope he's not trying to outsmart everyone by finding this cat hanging out in Quebec when there are several NFL guys who seem to be far more qualified.

And I'll go ahead and say it. With the McCaskeys paying Lovie, do they like the idea of getting a guy like Trestman on the relative cheap?

I trust that Emery has done his homework and been very thorough in this process. That doesn't mean whoever he picks will be the right guy. I mean he is picking through a collection of coahes who are not proven NFL head coaches. I'll admit I feel a bit leery about Trestman but at the same time, there is no guarantee any of these career OC's are guaranteed to be the right guy either. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I won't freak out if Trestman is the guy.

My personal preference has been either McCoy or Dennison but it doesn't sound like either of those guys is in the final running. Bevell? Maybe. Arians? He seems like a qualified guy but the Steelers fans I talk to really, really hate on him a lot.

Which ones are far more qualified? He's been an OC and QB coach in the NFL, has a ton of experience working with QBs (including Cutler), and has HC (in another league, yes) experience.

Any of the guys with several years of NFL success and innovation as coordinators. Do you think Trestman is hanging out in Canada by choice?

Trestman seems like an extreme high risk/high reward candidate.

He might be. Maybe he was told in previous interviews he needed to prove he could be a head coach and didn't want to go back to the collegiate level and deal with recruiting crap to do it. Just a thought.

Yeah I suppose that's possible. Unlikely but possible. Just saw a tweet that the last CFL coach to land an NFL head coaching job was Marv Levy. Didn't know that.

Anyway, more likely Trestman ran out of suitable options in the NFL. I don't mind a high risk/high reward move. Problem is at this point we have no idea what the reward might be.

We have no idea of knowing what the reward might be with ANY of the candidates.

I don't agree with that. Of course success as an OC doesn't translate perfectly, but we know what some of these guys are about and we know what the reward might be based on their success.

What are you saying, that one or more of these candidates is guaranteed success? Because that's how it reads to me. How can you say that?

If you can guarantee the one you choose will be the winner, then I'll let you pick my next big investment too :)

Of course that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is these more "conventional" candidates have a track record of NFL success to look at and decide which best fits the Bears personnel and Emery's philosophy. With Trestman it seems more like a hunch.
