I take issue with the notion that the Bears scouting staff has been very highly regarded around the NFL for years.

It makes me wonder how much of this is based on reputation and perception instead of actual results. How much time/ energy do teams spend monitoring what other teams around the league are doing?

That's what I mean with the comparison to pitching/hitting coaches in MLB. Every time one is hired we hire about how he is one of the best.

Very good analogy that you used. Just like pitching coaches get that 1-2 really good season out of an otherwise mediocre arm, NFL scouts get a reputation for finding that one guy who got passed over several times, who eventually becomes a star. The Bears scouting has been decent in the sense of either finding players that can excel in their defensive scheme or finding guys who can convert to new positions and excel. And most of the success has been later in the draft.

10-6 on paper. Surprised with the Giants/Bengals being so high. And the Browns/Steelers being so low. And as I said when the schedule was announced, if the Bears can get off to a 6-3, 7-1 start like the last couple years, they'll be fighting for HFA with that late season schedule.

Kyle Long will get a crash course on his job in the NFL with the Chicago Bears during the team’s rookie minicamp this weekend, but then he’s on his own until the start of training camp.

NFL rules prohibit the Bears’ first-round draft pick from participating in organized team activities that begin Monday and the mandatory veteran minicamp in June because of the class schedule at Oregon, where Long played this past fall.

Specifically, NFL rules mandate that a draft pick cannot take part in anything other than the rookie minicamp until after the school he attends has completed final exams. Oregon uses a quarter system and final exams run through June 14. Like most teams, the Bears are holding their veteran minicamp from June 11-13. In total, the guard will miss 13 practices – 10 OTA sessions and three days of minicamp.

That's a bummer for a guy who is so far behind the developmental curve at his position.

Mac and Spiegs are gonna talk to Florio in a couple min about this issue.

He's a lawyer? *Shrug*

I think it was just that they talk to him weekly so more coincidence than anything. Anyhow, Florio didn't say anything more than what we know by reading that bit you posted.

What if he takes them early or quits school?

Won't matter.

An exception to the rule is there for players who already have graduated or were working on graduate level work during the previous year. Even if a player has left school, he’s not eligible to participate until after the school’s exams have been completed. It’s not a new rule and it is one that has kept Bears’ draft picks off the practice field during the spring in the past. The rule has not snagged a first-round draft pick for the club in recent memory.

I remember it being an issue for Andrew Luck last year.

What's reasoning behind that rule? Seems a bit weird.

Old rule that's just never been changed.

Really? Seems to make sense so the kid isn't in the position of picking exams or a team requirement.

a lot of kids leave school early and enroll full-time in athlete factories.

So change the rule that it only applies if you're enrolled that semester/quarter. It doesn't make sense for a kid that finishes school in December (like the vast majority of draftees tend to do) not to be able to workout with his new team.

It was a memorable Thursday for Bears second-round draft pick Jon Bostic, who agreed to a four-year contract and arrived at Halas Hall for this weekend's rookie minicamp.

The only Bears draft choice who remains unsigned is first-round guard Kyle Long. The Ravens are the only other NFL team to sign any of their picks.

I don't think we should change a rule to encourage kids to drop out at the end of their college careers. It would only seem to effect those that attend schools on a quarter system. Sucks that we drafted such a kid but I don't think it warrants changing the rule.

It would make sense to allow kids that have already graduated to attend whatever camps the team has (not quit but actually graduate). I'd be a little surprised if the rule prevents those kids from attending team camps.

There's no way this is true, right? Am I reading it wrong?

Maybe its supposed to say "The Ravens are the only other NFL team to sign all of their picks"?

Although just found this article... http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2013/05/detroit_lions_announce_signing_1.html

The Detroit Lions have announced the signing of all nine 2013 draft picks.

I was with you Jersey, I couldn't believe that was true, but I was way too lazy to actually go disprove it myself. Perfectly happy to share the misinformation though.

...tried searching for some kind of nfl draft signings dashboard article, and failed.

I assume this is a poorly worded sentence. Like abohnhoff said, the Lions have all their picks signed now.
